Both sniffling and giggling and wiping under their eyes, they released each other.

Elle told me, “I’m okay. Sorry.”

I shook my head methodically. “Don’t you dare apologize for finding a friend.”

Elle was practically gasping with joy. “I’ve never had a girlfriend before.”

As the girls giggled and fell back into another hug, I didn’t react hastily when Brass came to my side. He was as entranced as I was.

Staring at the two women as if he’d never seen anything more beautiful, he quietly told me, “Mine’s been to Hell and back.”

What I would learn details about later was that this immediate unspoken bond between Elle and Sweets was soul-to-soul, due to their common tragedy of once being held captive…

A shiver raked my spirit as I thought about Elle’s past. “Yeah. Mine too.”

He growled, “Never again.”

I like this crazy fucker. “Over my dead body.”

Still watching the girls, he gave a nod that told me he was as serious as me. “Please, let your woman come back to visit Sweets sometime. I’ll be sure she stays safe.”

Believing Lorenzo wasn’t going down without a fight, I exhaled, then quietly said, “She has heavy heat on her right now, but someday, absolutely.”

“Yeah, Diesel filled me in a little. That’s why you’re welcome here. I don’t tolerate men who fuck with women.”

I smirked. “Then you just gained another ally.”

The girls lost in their own conversation again, there was a squeal! Sweets was elated while asking Elle, “You’re going to live in Austin?” Her shorter blonde hair bounced as she looked at Brass. “Can we go to their club sometime?”

As if anything his woman wanted, she got, Brass gazed at her. “I’ll make it happen, Sweets.”

She hopped on her toes before asking Elle, “Want to exchange numbers?”

Bras and I both started disagreeing with the girls, then looked at each other. He smirked with another nod, then told his woman, “Sorry, Sweets. Things got to settle first.”

We both knew if this plan failed, and Elle was found, no one wanted Lorenzo led back to Sweets due to a number in Elle’s phone.

Neither woman argued with us.

A knuckle rap on the open door had me turning to see Vice. “You all good, Boss?”

I was about to answer yes, but Sweets suddenly said, “Oh my gosh, what was I thinking? You guys must be exhausted.” She advanced toward Brass, then peered at his hand. As if this President wasn’t a man who literally carried deadly weapons in his front jean pocket, she lectured, “Brass, put that away and behave.”

He was the lion. She was the tamer.

Slipping the brass knuckles into his pocket, he leaned in for a kiss. Based on the way her eyes fluttered, Brass was capable of doing some tamin’ himself.

Thanking her new friend again, Elle finally shut the apartment door. How I was still on my feet was nothing but a miracle. Everything I’d been through in the last twenty-four hours was now barreling down on me. Physically and mentally, I had hit a wall. My body was demanding proper rest. Apparently, not having enough blood in your system can really wreak some havoc.

The backs of my legs touched the bed, but I knew if I dared sit the fuck down, getting up again wasn’t going to be an option. That pissed me off. My weakness made my mood somewhat volatile.

Elle seemed to recognize what man-train was pulling into the station, so she tried, “VP, you can collapse now. No one is looking. We’re alone.”

Without an ounce of energy left, I forced a menacing smirk. “I’m fine.” My hand weighed a thousand pounds, but I still forced it to tap my mouth. “We made it safely. Pay up.” I wanted the rest of that promised kiss.

“Oh?” She flirted while sauntering toward me. “Half-dead on your feet but still got enough energy to rock my world?”

My knees threatened to buckle, announcing how not ready I was, but I still threatened, “A fireworks show like you’ve never seen.”
