“I shouldn’t have run from my responsibilities.”

Vice came to me. “You love the club. No one doubts that. You just weren’t ready to be in charge of it.”

“You didn’t run when Dad made you Enforcer.”

Vice was one of the best because he learned from the best. Wings taught him as much as he could before he was killed. Vice became responsible as fuck, while I was still the wild child who refused to grow up. Yes, I was highly trained and damn good at getting club business done, but truly leading? Being responsible for the men under me? That shit made me shiver.

Until now.

Now I had to make every decision right. If not, it wasn’t only men I would lose.

I looked at the closed bathroom door. “It’s not the drugs, right?”

“Were you drugged when you met her?”

“No.”

“Your pops has fallen for her. There’s something there. You’re not crazy, Lynx.”

“It’s just so… fucking fast.”

Also staring at the door, he set a new bottle of water on the nightstand. “Dad said that’s how it went between your mom and pops.”

“No shit?” I asked, relieved, because their love was powerful. Even when Pops was blind.

My friend looked at me. “Brother, as much as it pains me to admit, because I prefer to be a badass and all,” he chuckled, “the ol’ saying is true. Behind every good man, there’s a good woman. Or, at least, was one at some point. And if you think about it, that possibly makes you two a perfect match. How many men know what it’s like to be captured and held against their will?”

“Dude, the mere hours I was gone tonight, I don’t think comes close to what I suspect she’s been through.”

His massive shoulders shrugged. “Does it matter? Against your will is against your will. The initial fear is jarring.”

“But… I broke free.”

“You shouldn’t have had to.”

With wide eyes, I looked to my Enforcer. My heart instantly started hammering. He would know. “Vice—”

“You should have never had a chance to learn that fear.” There was regret so deep in his eyes. “I’m sorry I failed you.”

Enforcers are strong and battle hard, but another role of theirs that is crucial is protecting members, even if only from themselves. He didn’t believe he had fulfilled that duty with me.

“Jesus, Vice. That’s not what happened—” He shook his head, denying me, so I said, “You know me and the shit I stir. Well, that’s what went down, brother, and I couldn’t let them take Pops because of it.”

His head fell forward. “No, that would have been…” He shivered. “He has thousands under him.”

“Exactly.”

He lifted his head back up, his expression dead serious. “And so do you.”

I rubbed a hand down my face. “You’re right. I’ll be more careful.”

He sighed. “Honestly, it may have been your fate.” He smirked. “I think that bullet in your gut slowed you down just enough to make sure you didn’t miss the one meant for you.”

Not wanting to sound like a puss, I teased, “Damn, you get that shit from the bible?”

He laughed. “Nah, they didn’t have bullets back then.” His smile faded. “There’s shit I gotta tell you about Elle.”

My stomach spoiled. “I ain’t gonna like it?”
