Page 62 of Hostile Fates

Without looking away from me, Lynx said, “Dag, tell Vice to ask around for some fresh clothes for Elle.”

I didn’t know why, but Dagger appeared surprised at the request, then super proud as he smiled, “On it, Boss,” before walking to the door and opening it to speak with Vice.

Legend? He appeared blissfully intoxicated. The joy on his face was that evident. That’s why I asked, “You’re that relieved I’m going to clean up?”

He blinked. “Umm—”

Lynx’s hand tightened on mine. “I’ve never given Dagger a direct order before.”

My brows bunched. “Oh… Are you supposed to or something?”

Staring at me, Lynx gave a nod. “I’m his Vice President.”

While Dagger softly talked to Vice at the door, I snuck a glance at Legend, then asked Lynx, “Why haven’t you before then?”

The light moment was over. His voice lowered. “Because he should’ve been the next Vice President.”

“Boy,” warned Legend, telling me this VP title was a new one for Lynx, and he had yet to embrace it.

The door shut and Dagger stayed by it with an expression that was haunted yet determined.

Lynx ignored both men, instead asking me, “Do you think I would be a good VP?”

Understanding this was a very important question, and that for some reason my opinion mattered, I paused to think so that I’d give the most honest answer. “Only knowing you for mere hours, I would be a fool to say yes or no, but what I can say is I believe you are fiercely loyal. I believe you are fiercely stubborn,” I smiled adoringly at him, “when you know what you want. I believe your heart means well, even if it has made a mistake. And I believe you have a family unit most would envy. Therefore, if you made the decision to lead good men, my gut tells me you could be,” I sighed at his father who had, in my eyes, already lived up to his road name, “legendary, too.”

Staring at Lynx again, I waited for his response.

It was intense. His jaw was tight. His eyes somewhat watery, he gave a curt nod. Then, with an emotionally strained voice, he vowed, “Then I will honor the title.”

Besides casual conversations with Kelly, I was brand new to the MC world and unaware of how significant this moment was, but the air in the little room became so thick, I could almost hear whispers from past fallen Stallion Vice Presidents. It was eerie. It was noble. It was rich, without a dollar spent.

Lynx looked at his father. “Pops.”

I tried to release Lynx’s hand so he could have privacy in this moment I didn’t feel I had a right to witness, but he gripped me, silently demanding I stay put and not let go. So, I set my shoulders back and stood strong for him.

His father shook his head. “Don’t worry about it—”

“I did you wrong tonight.” His deep voice broke. “I’ve done you wrong for years—”

Legend kept his eyes down on the bed. “Boy, it’s all good.”

“As I was driven away tonight—” a sob broke free before he choked it down, “—all I could think of was that I needed one more chance to tell you—” his jaw clicked, over and over, “that I love you.”

Legend burst into a sob and grabbed his son’s face. Without a word, he kissed his forehead, long and hard. Then he whispered, “I’ve known that all along.”

I wasn’t a part of the history between the two, but standing there, tears filled my eyes.

As Legend went to stand at the foot of the bed, a somber Dagger came to Lynx’s side. Lynx offered the hand I wasn’t holding to him.

With emotion on his bearded face, Dagger sat in Legend’s chair, taking hold of that hand.

Again, the intensity grew. As energy crackled, Lynx whispered to him, “I’m sorry.”

Dagger’s head fell forward as he tightened his hold on Lynx.

In another deep whisper, Lynx confessed, “You were right.”

The tear that dripped from Dagger was profound. I knew it was a rarity by the way Legend kept swallowing at the sight of it.
