She huffed. “If I get caught kissing you, the next hole you receive will be in your head.”

Pfft! “I can handle myself.”

She stood while inspecting the room we were in. “Oh, yes, you’re handling yourself just fine. I’m only in here because I want to get up close and personal with a mop.”

I chuckled. “You’ve caught me on a bad day.”

“Bad day?” Green Eyes placed her hands on her luscious hips. “I think it’s safe to say tonight is more on the side of disastrous.”

Observing her long legs, I shrugged. “Could be worse.”

“Are you checking me out?”

“Most certainly.”

“Can you stand?”

“I believe so, but I’d prefer you sit on my lap.”

Rolling her eyes, she approached and grabbed my hand again. “I’m not talking about kissing or sex.” She pulled. “I need to get you out of here, and outside, to meet up with your leathered buddies.” When I didn’t budge, she cursed, “Damn, you’re heavy.”

“Brothers. Not buddies.”

Still pulling on my hand, and now also my wrist with her other hand, her high heels kept slipping on the concrete flooring, and she grunted, “Brothers. Got it. Can you please help me?”

I was too tired to move. “What’s your name?”

“Uh, Julie. Now get up.”

“Your real name.”

She stopped pulling. “VP, let’s not do this. Okay?”

“Do what?” Playfully, I shook her hand a little.

She let my fingers hold hers. “Exchange names and pretend we’ll have brunch someday.”

That made me laugh. “Brunch? Not my style. How about we grab a beer at some local hole-in-the-wall?”

“Beer?” It was her turn to laugh. “Not my style. Mimosa?”

“A mi-whatta?”

As if I had stung her, her hand slipped from mine, and she took a step back while shaking her head. “Two different worlds.”

She was right. We were from opposite ends of the universe. And I was currently dying. What was the point? Who the fuck knows? Who the fuck knows why people do what they do when about to leave this world behind.

I gestured to her satiny top. “Sorry about staining your, er, blouse.”

She gently pulled on it. “This silly ol’ five-hundred-dollar silk? I have thirty more of them.”

I pushed my upper body off the wall to try to get up. “Did your daddy buy that for you?”

Luckily, Green Eyes rushed to assist me. Putting my arm over her shoulder, she helped me stand while answering, “No. He’s… gone.”

Groaning because being on my feet felt like shit, I said, “Gone? As in, dead?”

We took a step toward the door. “Yes.”
