A kiss was quickly pressed to my forehead, then I heard deep whispers. “Is she drugged?”

The new slave answered, “No. He’s had his men keep her awake for days.”

The deep whisper added, “Are there any more of you?”

She replied, “Delivery complete. Just her and me now.”

The deep whisper saddened me. “Was there a teenage girl with grey eyes?”

“No.”

“Okay, let’s get you out of here. Vice, help her.”

Lacking the enchantment I was striving for, I cheered at Vice’s name, “My dwarf!”

The side of a bearded face rested against my mouth. “Shhh, we’re not out of the woods, babe.”

I sighed. “Woods. Snow White… Do you have an apple?”

“I’ll get you as many as you want if you don’t make a sound.”

I nodded, my nose scraping leather. “I choose freedom.”

Barely conscious, I was carried out of the dungeon.

As my mind faded in and out, I heard silencers going off and bodies hitting the ground. I heard grunts and struggles, then alarms… and whispers of, “Go! Go! Go!”

I was trying to wake up and let the last bit of adrenaline I had kicked in. I knew this rescue was going to be tough because Lorenzo had tripled his men, knowing Lynx would be irate I left him.

Once the running stopped, Vice was telling the slave, “Climb down as fast as you can!”

Below me, her cries faded in a hurry as Lynx said, “I have to get her over my shoulder.”

Then we jolted due to something hitting us. Lynx yelled, “Vice!”

He promised, “I got him, but I’m hit. I’m hit.”

What? My eyes flew open.

It was night. Stars all around us. We were at sea, yet I had no idea where.

Staring at my Old Man’s handsome face, I reached out, searching for a huge set of shoulders. “Vice—”

“I’m okay.” He told Lynx, “Carry her down.”

I started to wiggle. “I can climb down. Put me down.”

Facing the outer edge of the yacht where there were no bars, and toward a hanging ladder, my bare feet touched the ground for only a second when gunfire started coming from a much smaller boat behind us.

Bullets flew past us, trying to help…

Lynx let me go to face those who were encroaching on us, but then a bullet from one of Lorenzo’s men hit his shoulder. His body flew backward, right past my side and off the boat.

In slow motion, like the night Mammy was falling off the roof, I reached out for him, but I was too slow after being sleep deprived.

Bodies were dropping behind me, an absolute blood bath, but all I could do was watch my leathered angel fall. His body made a huge splash when it hit the water.

In slow motion, I felt Vice at my back, firing his gun, while Lynx resurfaced, roaring, “Jump!”
