As the truck stopped, he asked, “Need anything else? Some girly shit?”

I was still under the influence of narcotics as I said, “Cookies and milk. Everyone needs cookies and milk while sitting around the Christmas tree.”

Did the little girl ever get cookies and milk?

I fell back asleep before anyone said a word.

Da was walking her toward the plank to exit the boat when Lorenzo lifted a finger. The one action prompted Da to be stopped and the little girl to be yanked from him.

He turned, fear in his eyes. It was the same fear he showed when he thought Kelly was there because of Mammy.

Cautiously lifting his hands, he eyed the guards closing in on him. “Lorenzo, you said I could get you the rest of the money later.”

The leader of this human trafficking ring simply waved a hand through the air. “It seems I lied to you. I just brought you here—”

My leash was jerked so tight that I was forced to my knees.

He roared in my face, “—so this bitch could learn a lesson!” To his men, he roared, “Take the girl to the waiting car.”

She had already been sold to another.

I cried, “No!”

Spittle hit my face as he demanded of his men… “And kill him.”

Even though it stung my neck, skin tearing due to my collar, I turned my head to see Da one last time. A bullet caused blood to spray on me, right before Da hit the deck—

I awoke with Lynx laughing underneath me. He was whispering, “You have no skill. None.”

“The fuck? Look at this shit? Mad skills, Pup.”

Also feeling the truck moving down the road, my eyes finally peeled open to see Legend in the front seat, scotch-taping something green and long across the top of the windshield.

Blinking away my blurry vision, I asked myself, What is that?

It was green garland, all over the inside of the truck.

As if he were a kid caught inspecting wrapped gifts, he jolted when seeing me. “She’s awake! This is not a drill! Action!”

Still waking from my nightmare, I bounced on a laughing Lynx’s chest while watching Vice in the driver’s seat pushing things out of his way. “There’s too much shit hanging! I can’t find the radio!”

Suddenly, Christmas carols drowned out the loud diesel engine.

“What are you guys doing?” Groggily, I sat up, Lynx’s leg still behind me.

Legend told me, “Wait! Wait! There’s more!”

In an instant, different colored Christmas lights lit up all over the ceiling of the truck. There were fake snowflakes hanging—from gobs of scotch tape—and red bows.

As I covered my mouth in complete awe, three beautiful men cheered, “Merry Christmas!”

It wasn’t truly Christmas yet, but the sentiment was so touching, I started to cry. This time, every shed tear wasn’t with fear or sadness. It was with my beaming smile.

The first family I ever had, had betrayed me.

This family?

We drove down a rural road, the inside of the vehicle looking like it’d been taken over by psychedelic-mushrooms and Christmas overload, while singing carols—with added curse words by three of the biggest-hearted bikers in the world.
