Another long moment passed…

Licking dry lips, he told me, “We believe… Lorenzo—”

That name had my veins icing over, but I buried that fear for Lynx’s sake.

“—placed a tracker inside you.”

I had just told Lynx nightmares only have power while we slept. It appeared I had been mistaken. Lorenzo was a bible-reading beast who didn’t live by the words on the pages.

Struggling to swallow, I quietly asked, “Are you sure?”

Lynx didn’t need to answer me. The pity on his face was enough. He was sure.

In my mind, there was only one way for Lynx to know this.

My heart now racing, I nodded. “He’s here, isn’t he?”

Lynx’s mouth started moving, but my ears could no longer hear. Dread had taken over.

Seconds ago, I felt like the strength Lynx needed to combat any problem he might have. Now my old survival instincts were front and center. Just like that, adrenalin pulsed throughout my whole body. “He did it. He found us.” I grabbed my chest. “Oh, Jesus.” My eyes raced to the window, expecting to see Lorenzo watching me through the closed curtains. “We gotta run.” My eyes raced back to Lynx. “You have to run. Lynx, he will kill you. Just go. I’ll buy you time—”

“Not happening,” rumbled from behind me.

Startled beyond measure, I spun on my bare feet, putting Lynx at my back so I could shield him. I found three looming shadows. That’s all my terrified eyes saw. My paralyzed mind knew it was Lorenzo and two of his men. I couldn’t let them hurt Lynx, not after all he had risked for me. I started to scream, “Don’t you fucking touch him,” but was silenced by a hand over my mouth from behind.

I was already mentally too far lost in fear to comprehend that no one had replaced Lynx behind me, and it was now he who was restraining me, until I was crouched over on my knees with a heavy body’s weight on me.

A familiar smell—leather mixed with tobacco—that was my safe haven, so unlike Lorenzo’s fancy cologne that made me ill, entered my senses. Then, a familiar touch tapped my chest, and a deep voice in my ear kept repeating, “You’re safe. You’re safe. I’ve got you. I’ve got you…” Tap. Tap. “Here’s where we are our best.”

Lynx.

When I first met Lynx, I was ready to greet death with a smile on my face. That’s why I’d begged him not to jumpstart my heart that had died long ago.

That’s the thing about Duke Wolf Bryant. What he wants, he gets.

Now my heart beat madly for him…

From the floor, I looked up to see those three shadows on the other side of the bed, now holding their hands in front of them, trying to show they meant no harm.

Lynx’s voice kept speaking in my ear. Smooth and steady, clearing my mind enough so that I could see the shadows were Legend, Dagger, and Vice.

With relief, I sagged into Lynx.

Staying crouched on the floor, he held me affectionately. “There she is. There’s my girl.”

I could feel tears burning the corners of my eyes as I shook. “I’m sorry.” I felt so weak when I needed to be strong.

He held me tighter. “Not even. That was on us. I didn’t tell you they were in the room.”

Legend quietly told me, “Sorry, Precious.”

“It’s okay.” I gripped the warm arms around me. “So, Lorenzo isn’t here?”

“No, babe.”

I understood. “But he’ll come.”

I felt Lynx nod at my back. “Lookin’ like it.”
