“Bullets?”

“Can’t you tell if bullets have been shot from the same gun?”

His mouth tightened. “I’m sorry, but with the investigation still going on, I can’t discuss the details.”

“I understand. I just keep thinking about...” She shook her head. “Well...about poor old Earl dead in the woods. And then Leon getting shot at. Maybe this Vince was really crazy, and no one knew. Maybe he did something to Earl, and then he shot Leon. Can you do ballistics tests or something?”

“As I said, there are investigators working on the case.”

“But—”

“If there’s something you know about this, Sara, you need to tell me.” Nathan’s gaze narrowed. “Have you seen something suspicious?”

“No—not at all.” She gave him a weak smile. “I’m just having horrible visions of poor old Earl, and then think about his son being hurt just a week later. I’ve started to worry more about being out alone. Maybe there’s some psycho running around.”

“I don’t think you need to worry.”

The finality in his voice told her that she’d said as much as she could without making him too suspicious. For now, the rest was in Nathan’s hands.

“Thanks.” She stood, and Harold joined her. “I’ve been a little scared, but you’ve made me feel a lot better. Guess I’d best let you get back to work.”

She was almost to the door of his office when he called her name. “I haven’t seen you around much,” he said, rubbing a weary hand at the back of his neck. “Have you been out to see Leon lately?”

“In a manner of speaking.” Sara gave a rueful laugh. “I think he’s still sulking because I called 911 about his wound.”

“He won’t talk?”

“Nope. But it’s not just me. He won’t let the county-funded housekeeper come in to help him, and they’ve been trying to send him meals for the past week, but he won’t accept them.”

“Could he be ill?”

“His social worker did talk him into letting her visit yesterday. She says his house is fairly clean, and he looks healthy enough—his wound is healing well. He let her bring in a few boxes of groceries.” Sara shook her head. “I hear he’s got a well-stocked pantry, though. Earl must have bought him canned food by the case.”

“So she’s not on the verge of trying to have him committed somewhere?”

“No, thank goodness. Apparently he’s doing okay so far. He must be lonely, though, so I’m still trying to visit.”

“I think that’s great.” Nathan smiled at her. “Did you get my message?”

“Umm...yes. Sorry I didn’t get back to you.” He’d left a message on her machine, asking about when he could pay up on their bet—she had indeed caught the biggest fish—but she’d erased it.

The more she saw him, the more she dreamed of impossible dreams. She needed to remind herself that once this case was over, she’d be back in Dallas.

There was no future for her here in Ryansville, and even if there was, she only had to remember the Roswells’ sprawling estate and the social circle his family moved in.

There was no place for her in a life like his.
