He laughed. “I’d like that better.”

“Thank you for a wonderful afternoon,” she whispered. “I’ve enjoyed every minute.”

She was simply adorable, sitting there clutching her fishing rod.

He set aside his own fishing rod, then leaned forward to kiss her.

Her lashes drifted downward as she leaned into him...

Something long, cold, and wet swept against his ear.

And then it growled softly. Harold.

Nathan felt like growling himself when Sara broke away, a bright blush rising to her cheekbones.

“I guess he wants to make sure I’m okay.”

“Are you?”

“I shouldn’t have done that,” she murmured, leaning back.

“Why not?”

She gave a vague wave of her hand. “Because it’s...wrong. We’re just friends.”

They fished for another few hours, until a chilly, early November dusk settled over the lake, and Harold started to whine and pace the narrow confines of the boat.

Sara reeled in a few more walleyes. Too distracted to concentrate, Nathan missed several good strikes, then gave up and just settled back to watch her.

She wanted friendship. Casual distance. He wanted a chance to see if their relationship could lead to something more. When he paid up on their fishing bet with a good dinner, he was going to see about changing her mind.
