If he had documents of some kind for her, maybe he could just hand them over. If he needed to talk, they could arrange another meeting.

Back at her apartment, she pulled into her parking space in the back. Nathan was at her car door before she had it open all the way.

“You’re staying home now, right?” he asked. A corner of his mouth tilted up into a half smile. “No more late-night walks?”

“Absolutely not.” Harold jumped out of the vehicle and came to stand at her side as she glanced at her watch. “Oh, my—it’s twelve-thirty.”

Her sweater snagged on a rough edge of her door when she climbed out of the SUV, and Nathan reached out to cup her elbow as she freed the loop of yarn. Just a casual contact, nothing more...but instantly she felt her pulse flutter.

“I’ll wait here to make sure you get inside.” He glanced around. “With all these pine trees, your apartment entrance is completely hidden from view—even from the Shuellers’ house. You need to be careful.”

He stood close enough for her to catch the compelling scent of his woodsy aftershave, and his low, smoky voice sent a shiver rippling through her.

A sense of disorientation slid through her as she looked up to find interest sparking in his hazel eyes.

So he felt the same unsettling attraction she did?

With a sharp, dismissive shake of his head, he stepped back. “Keep safe,” he growled. He waited until she was inside, then turned back to his patrol car.

From her kitchen window, she watched as he drove off. Clearly she hadn’t been getting enough sleep—or maybe she just needed a good, long vacation after this was all over.

She’d just totally imagined the kind of romantic relationship he would never offer and she could never accept. If the secrets she held close weren’t enough, she had only to look at her own dark past.

Though maybe it wouldn’t hurt to dream.

CHAPTER EIGHT

AFTER EARL FAILED to show up at the park Wednesday night, Sara drove past his place a number of times. From the cover of the underbrush and trees along his fence, she’d spent hours watching for any activity.

The gate across the rutted lane leading into Stark’s Salvage remained locked, and she’d seen no sign of Earl or Leon.

If Allen had called back in time with an offer of backup assistance, she might have been able to make contact with Earl in the park.

But Allen and the other agents had been involved in a major raid north of St. Paul, and his answer had come too late.

Had Earl been spooked by seeing Nathan drive up behind her SUV?
