I couldn’t help but snicker at her word choice. How could she be so freaking positive all the time?

“Oh, I’m not,” Molly said as she held the door for me. “There are some days I hate everyone and everything. But today isn’t one of them. I love the salon! I love Kyle!”

A handsome man with long gorgeous dark blond hair motored across the faux hardwood floor and scooped Molly into a giant hug.

By the time he put her down, she was giggling. “Your hair tickles, Uncle Kyle.”

I raised an eyebrow. “He’s your uncle?”

Kyle was a gorgeous man in his late thirties with unbelievably beautiful hair. The strands were so silky, I had to stop myself from reaching out and touching it. His eyes were a stunning smoky blue, his eyebrows were perfectly groomed, and his body looked like it was chiseled from stone.

Kyle shifted his attention to me, his jaw dropped and eyes wide. “Who is this enthralling creature you brought to my humble salon?”

Molly beamed. “This is Phoebe. Phoebe, this is my honorary uncle, no actual relation, but he is a fizzling wizard with hair.”

Kyle stalked up to me, his hands already in my hair before I could protest. “Oh, Phoebe,” he purred, “I have to get my hands on your locks. Please, baby, let me take you to my chair.”

I peeked around him to look at Molly. “Ah, Molls?”

She nodded. “Go. You won’t regret it.”

Kyle whisked me off past Kiley where a crying girl sat in her chair with choppy bangs and hair dyed three different colors falling out in her hands.

“Be sweet to her, Kyle,” Kiley called after us. “She’s new in town and we want her to stay.”

Kyle pulled me into a separate room of the salon, his own personal styling center away from the crowds. Then he spun me and tossed me down into his chair. He leaned forward, his hands resting on the chair arms, and looked deep into my eyes. “Baby, I’m gonna be so good to you, you’ll want to come back for more.”

I gulped, swallowed hard, and let little butterflies take flight in my stomach. A little titter came out of my lips and I’m sure I was blushing. He didn’t mean it. But having a man’s attention focused on me like this was addictive. I’d come back just to hear him purr into my ear.

Over the next two hours, he pampered and caressed my scalp, showering me with sweet words and gave me the best scalp massage of my life while he told me his life story.

As he started styling my hair, I pouted. “I hate that you’re already married.”

Kyle smiled down at me from his work with a flat iron. “Me too, babe.”

I furrowed my brow. “Then why are you?”

He sighed. “Helping a damsel in distress, I guess. Seemed like the right thing to do at the time,” he said gazing into the distance, “but now I’m not so sure.”

“Do you love her?”

He shrugged. “Like my sister. That’s all.” He wrinkled his nose. “I’m not really into women.”

I nodded my understanding. “There’s someone else.”

I saw the pain in his eyes. “No one who’ll ever take a second look at me.”

I had to look away from him. “Unrequited love fucking sucks.”

Pulling my chin back up, he sprayed and styled my hair. “You too?”

Something about our time together made me feel like I could say it out loud. “I’ve loved him for almost twenty years. But I’m not his type.”

He nodded. “Well, my pretty, once he looks at you tonight, he’s going to swallow his tongue. You look spectacular.”

When he spun me around so I could see my new style, my breath caught in my throat. “How did you do that?”

He fluffed my hair a little. “Easy, you’re gorgeous. Your hair is healthy. Taking off some of the dead weight, I gave you a fun, flirty style. You still have some length since it comes down to your collar bone here, but it won’t weigh you down anymore.”
