Molly leaned in. “Sam has been in love with Harmony since last August, not this year, but the one before. But she won’t give him the time of day. She was engaged to a pilot in the military who died during a mission a few years ago. Her son, Omar is awesome, but they both have some issues because of the loss of Ben, her dead fiancé and Omar’s father. It’s been hard for Harmony to allow herself to even consider opening up to Sam. But that man is patient and persistent as hell. A year and a half and all he managed was to get her to sit with him at the same table for Thanksgiving.”

“Holy shit,” I breathed. “In love for a year and a half and nothing?”

She nodded.

I felt tears stinging my eyes. “That’s the most beautiful thing,” I started, but felt Ransom headed our way.

“Come on, Raven. Gotta head back or you’ll freeze,” Ransom said gruffly.

Swiping at my eye, I gazed up at him and saw an expression on his face that made me not want to ask for anything. “Okay. Raincheck, Molly. We’ll talk again soon, I hope.”

She smirked. “Dinner party at my parents’ house this week. I’m sure you both will be invited,” she said pointedly to Ransom. “Then you can tell me the story of why he calls you Raven.”

Ransom took my hand and pulled me toward his truck while I waved goodbye.

When we got back to the truck, he growled.

I turned to look at his grumpy profile. “Something wrong, Chief?”

He huffed. “All that worry and I had to pull you away.”

I snickered. “Well, that’s because I didn’t know Molly would be there. She’s incredible.”

He nodded and grunted.

As we rode back to his place in silence, I thought about Sam, Molly, Poppy, and Harmony. I thought I would feel awkward around them or at least self-conscious since I hadn’t primped before leaving the house. But I didn’t. I felt, well, good.

“I think I’m going to like it here,” I mused watching some birds of prey soar by in the distance.

RANSOM

With the dinner party at Ilya and Kiley’s place tonight, Phoebe set out clothes for me: black dress pants with the crease down the center, a black leather belt, a black button-down shirt with the collar undone two buttons, and black socks and boots. Black from head to toe. And a post-it note to leave my hair down. Apparently, that was a must.

“I can’t believe you got me to wear this,” I said as I entered the kitchen. “I don’t think I’ve ever worn all black before.”

Looking up, I found Phoebe fanning herself. I shot her a look.

She cleared her throat and wiggled out of a baggy sweater. “Don’t think I need the sweater over this dress after all.”

Without the sweater over her dress, I almost swallowed my tongue. She wore a lovely long-sleeved navy dress with gold stars scattered all over it and a gold belt. With a long pair of suede boots up over her knees and hoop earrings swinging at her neck, she looked perfectly edible.

I went to the kitchen and grabbed a glass of water. How was I ever going to survive being close to her all night without blurring the lines of our friendship?

She huffed out a laugh. “You clean up good, Chief.”

I growled. “You too.” I pretended to be irritated by her nickname. If she knew I actually enjoyed it, she’d probably stop using it altogether and that would be a fucking tragedy.

She coughed nervously as she grabbed a long wool coat. “Ready?”

“You sure this is okay?” I looked behind me to make sure I’d tucked everything in properly.

She stared into space. “Oh, yeah, baby.”

My brows furrowed. “Raven?”

Her eyes darted to mine. “Yeah?”
