CLARA

What the hell am I doing here?

I glance around the room, trying to work out why I have to be at this dumb party tonight. I cannot see the point at all. Just because the six alphas need to have a meeting about Chicago business doesn’t mean the rest of us have to be here… right?

But it looks like I’m the only one complaining. Everyone else is well and truly getting into the swing of things. This might well be the party of the year… even if it is only March. But I’m not interested in the raucous screaming and drinking, the dancing and party games. Everyone else is happily letting loose, glad to be set free by our alphas for the evening, but not me.

Urgh, what the hell is wrong with me?

I don’t think my alpha, Brian, has helped things. Making me wear this seriously tight black dress that keeps riding up my butt and kinda makes it hard to breathe, sucks. If I could choose whatIwant to wear, then I’d be in something much more comfortable.

I hang out in the corner of the room, nursing the one drink I plan on having tonight, boredom tearing through my brain. What I really wish is that I could be up there, in the meeting room with the alphas, learning more about what’s going on. I’m not just a bimbo to be paraded around in a tight dress. I have a brain between my ears. I can help out, right?

I glance up towards the ceiling, wishing I could hear what was happening up there. I even push up onto my tiptoes, which makes no difference considering I’m in sky-high heels, but of course, I can’t pick up on a thing. The music is too loud, and my hearing is only better in wolf form. It’s irritating because I want to know what’s going on up there and how long things will last. Ithasto be coming to an end soon, right?

“Hey, what’s that?” A guy damn near knocks me over in his drunken state while he stumbles into me, trying to get my attention. “That necklace, what is it?”

I snatch the gold chain away before he can really get his hands on it, and twiddle the blue gem between my fingers. “It’s my jewelry. What do you think it is?”

“All right,” he snorts, with his hands in the air in a surrendering gesture. “No need to be so cold. I’m only trying to get to know you. Wow. You are a crazy bitch…”

He lets that hang in the air as if I’m going to tell him my name, but I have no intention of doing so. This man doesn’t even know me, yet he seems to think he can try putting his hands on me, and insult and call me names. As if!

“You can go now,” I dismiss him. “Thanks for trying.”

Urgh, it’s time for this to be over now. I step away from the wall to try and find a way to get to Brian. I need to get out of here now. I’m not hanging around any longer. No way.

But reaching the bottom of the stairs is as far as I go. I halt in my tracks as I spot the five alphas appearing at the top, ready to descend to join us. I have to admit, no matter how wound up I am about allthis, my breath even gets caught inmythroat at the sight of them. There is something undeniably powerful about one alpha on his own, never mind a bunch of them all together, standing together almost in formation, with a shared smile.

I don’t know what has happened up there, but it feels magnetic. I can’t take my eye off the alpha at the front of the pack, the man who owns this house. Mason Thompson… one of the most well-known billionaire alphas in Chicago. I don’t want to be impressed with him, but I am.

“Good to see you all having fun.” Mason’s chocolatey smooth voice ricochets through the whole house. “But now that business has concluded, it is time for therealparty to begin.”

Any complaints that I just had go flying out of my head. I might not have the strength to join in with the intense round of applause, but I’m also not running out the door. It’s almost as if I’m frozen to the spot, unable to move even if I wanted to… but I’m not sure I do anymore.

Mason’s eyes sweep around the room, but I find them locking in on me, shocking me to the very core. The feel of his gaze is like lightning bolts tearing through my body at the speed of light. Does he make everyone feel this way? With his rugged good looks, his very muscular body, and his cheeky lop-sided grin… I’m sure I’m not the only one shuddering.

Once Mason takes a step into the crowd, the partying begins once more. He has a magical way about him that just makes things happen without even trying, and I appreciate that. I watch him move through the crowd with ease, barely even noticing the rest of the alphas as they move with him. God, Mason really is handsome, charming, wearing the sort of pristine suit that I adore. I’ve heard that he’s devilishly quick-witted as well, which makes him exactly my type.

I remain right where I am, almost as if I know he’ll be coming to join me soon. I can sense a weird pull between us, even in the very full room. Mason makes his way around the room, shaking a few hands, but it isn’t long before my prediction is correct, and this very powerful man is headed towards me with a fixed, intense stare. Holy shit, are my feet even touching the ground anymore?

“You are going to dance with me,” Mason declares as he takes my hand, bringing it to his lips for a gentle kiss. Even the lightest graze of his lips brushing against mine is more electrifying than anything I have ever experienced in my life. “Come on, let’s go…”

He knows I can’t turn down a demand from a man of his status, but that isn’t why I follow him. I can’t stop my feet from moving towards the dance floor with him. I can’t help it. Already, just with one glance, I’m absolutely intoxicated by him. He has all the power over me already.

Is this why he’s also known as the strongest man in the city? Because no one can help themselves around him. They simply give him what he wants.

In the middle of the dance floor, he twists around, and we start to move in time to the music. I can’t even feel self-conscious around him because of the way he’s looking at me. It’s as if he thinks that I’m fire. The hottest thing he has ever laid eyes on. I’m a God damn puddle at his feet.

“You are the loveliest woman in this room,” Mason murmurs, his lips so dangerously close to my ear that I can hardly stand the tension. “I’m drawn to you.”

Drawn to me… my God, even his flirting words are beautiful. I’d love to be able to respond, but honestly, I’m way too blown away by him. He’s stolen the air from my lungs and the words from my voice box. I might as well be out of control completely.

He grinds closer against me, locking us in our own little bubble. The rest of the world simply melts away into nothingness as he smiles at me. Even the noise of the party isn’t as much of a problem anymore. It’s just me and him, clinging together in a heady ball of lust.

“I want to take you far away from all of this,” he mutters, each word pure seduction as it falls out of his mouth. “I want us to be alone…”
