“What do you mean you don’t know?” Anger rushed through Skylar’s body, overtaking everything else. Placing her hands on his chest, she pushed him away from her.

“It means I don’t know, Skylar!” Dyllan ran his hands through his hair as he started pacing the office. “I was thinking about it before Vegas and now I don’t know!”

She followed his movements as he took a few steps and turned, repeating the same movement over and over in the small room. “Do you want to go?”

He stopped and looked at her. “No.” His voice was flat, and she wasn’t sure if she believed him.

“So why don’t you know?”

“It’s complicated.” He started his pacing again.

“So, make it simple then. If you don’t want to go, why are you still thinking about it?”

“Because if I take it, then someone else can’t!’ He paused, rubbing his hands over his face. “If something happened to me, you’d be alright. We don’t have any kids I’d leave behind. You’d move on. Nothing would change, but if someone like Jax took the job and they died—well, the story would be different.”

“How dare you,” she exclaimed as she stomped over to him. “You don’t think anything would change? You think I’d just say, ‘oh well, nice knowing him,’ and move on? You’re delusional!”

“Don’t put words in my mouth; that’s not what I’m saying!” He stood taller as they squared off, his face turning a slight red. “What I’m saying is that it would be easier for you to move on.”

“You don’t know what you’re talking about. Sure, we don’t have kids, but what about me? You pushed for this marriage and now you’re willing to leave and not care if you come back? You know what, fuck you!”

Dyllan stood back; shock written on his face like he’d been stung. “What happened to your no swearing rule?”

“It was warranted.” Skylar took a deep breath through her nose. She kicked herself for letting him get to her to the point of cursing, the one thing that normally would be her biggest pet peeve, but at that moment, it was the only way to express how she felt. “So, where do we go from here?”

“We go back out there, smile, and let them have their night. There’s nothing to discuss right now, and Travis shouldn’t have said anything. It’s a non-issue right now,” he said gruffly.

“So, when does it become an issue then? When you decide that you can’t be here anymore? Will you talk to me about it or just take it and leave?” Her hands flew to her hips, anger rising through her body.

“I would never make a decision like this without you. The job posting came to me before Vegas and I hadn’t responded. I still have a few months until the next mayoral election, and I wasn’t going to do anything until that had been settled. We can discuss this later, but I really don’t want to do this right now in Zach’s office.”

Skylar crossed her arms and studied him. She didn’t want to have this discussion at that moment either, but she couldn’t get rid of the nagging feeling that there was more to it than he was telling her.

“Fine, but this isn’t over,” she huffed.

Dyllan dropped his shoulders, pulling her into his arms. “I know.” He kissed her head as he held her tight.

“And you promise you’ll talk to me about it before making any decisions?” She wrapped her arms around his waist and pressed her head to his chest, calming herself to the rhythm of his heartbeat.

“Yup.”

“And Dyllan?” she asked, holding him tighter.

“Yeah, babydoll?”

“I love you.” Her heart stammered in her chest at the confession. This wasn’t how she was planning on telling him but she couldn’t help it. She needed him to know that they were worth fighting for. That she was worth fighting for. The thought of him leaving made her stomach sink.

“I love you, too, babydoll.”

Skylar grinned as a tear streaked down her cheek. This was the love she’d been looking for, what she wanted when she looked at Zach and Mandy. She worried that it wasn’t going to be enough for Dyllan.

Chapter Twenty

Dyllan

Dyllan gripped the steering wheel in his hand, knuckles turning white as he stared at the road in front of him. Skylar held his other hand, their joined fingers resting casually on the console between them, but Dyllan knew the tension in the cab of his truck was anything but casual.

Since the night at the brewery, Skylar had been physically closer to him but emotionally distant. He couldn’t place what was going on in her brain and she kept insisting everything was fine. She’d be affectionate with him, laid with him at night, the sex had been incredible, but there was something missing since their fight in the office, and he didn’t know what it was. It pissed him off because if he didn’t know what it was, he couldn’t fix it.
