Chapter One

Skylar

The wind whipped through Skylar Martin’s hair, making it fly around her face in chaotic disarray.

Much like my life.

Enjoying the first truly warm spring day, Skylar put the top down on her fiery red convertible, with sunglasses on and her long blonde hair flying free. ‘I’ve Got a Hole Where My Heart Should Be’ blasting as she made her way out of the city that had caused her nothing but heartbreak for the last couple of months.

The Sheepdogs always know how to talk to my soul.

The day she got the call from Kade asking her to plan her wedding had been the first decent day she’d had in months. For once, she was excited. She had a job, she’d get to see her friend, and most importantly, she’d get out of this godforsaken city.

Driving down the highway, she sang the lyrics as loud as possible, giving her emotions to the wind as she traded the skyscrapers for the open skies. It’d been so long since she’d been out of the city that she’d forgotten how clean the air was and how open the fields were outside city limits.

Well, except for the stretch where she hit the farms with the freshly laid manure. Other than that, this was what she’d been searching for, what she felt she’d been longing for.

That’s a rabbit hole I’m not ready to dive into yet.

Her thoughts were interrupted when ‘Don’t Want to Miss a Thing’ blasted through her speaker system, alerting her to an incoming call. The ringtone was initially set as a romantic sentiment with her ex but was now a reminder of how her life had fallen apart.

Ugh, I need to change that. ‘I Knew You Were Trouble’ seems appropriate.

Hitting the button, she smiled when Kade’s number flashed across the dash.

“Hey, friend!”

“Hey, you! I’m so excited for you to get here!” Kade’s voice rang through the speakers, barely audible over the wind whipping around Skylar.

“Me, too.” Skylar smiled as she sunk back into her seat, finally feeling her body relax.

“Yay! Lila and I can’t wait for you to get here. She’s been baking like crazy all day.”

Skylar’s mouth watered just thinking about all the treats their friend Lila Langston was likely making at her and Kade’s shop, Charmed Bakery. She’d gone to Logan Creek for a weekend the previous month to see the wedding venue, and she swore she’d eaten half the bakery’s offerings in the process.

“Well, tell her not to make too much on my account. I’m still working off the treats from the last time I saw you.”

Kade laughed, “Have you tried telling Lila to stop baking?”

“Fair. Good thing you’ve got yourself a hot fiancé to help you work off all those calories,” Skylar joked.

“Haha,” Kade laughed sarcastically. “So, when do you think you’ll get here?”

“In a few hours. I’m in Chilliwack now and am going to stop in Hope and grab a coffee.”

“Oh! That place on Wallace?” Kade’s voice raised excitedly.

“That’s the one!”

“Can you grab me some of their beans? I’ve been dying for some but haven’t had the chance to make the drive.”

“You got it, babe. See you and that handsome hubby-to-be of yours in a little bit.”

Skylar ended the call with a smile on her face. The first genuine smile she’d had since she threw her engagement ring back at her fiancé.

As the kilometres flew past, she left more stress and worries on the pavement behind her. She couldn’t explain the peace washing over her the closer she got to Logan Creek, but it no longer felt like driving away from something — rather, it felt like driving toward something new.

Pulling her car into the street parking in front of the coffee shop, Skylar closed her eyes and sank back into her seat, letting the warm spring sun wash over her. Goosebumps ran over her skin from the cool wind floating up from the water. The street along the historic buildings ran from the river to the mountains, creating a majestic backdrop that let Skylar drop all her problems, allowing them to float up to the heavens.
