"Hi," Gina says as I come in. She's sitting and reading the newspaper. "I made some chicken, so you guys can have that for dinner. Maddie never woke to have it for lunch."
I nod. "I just checked in on her. I can bring her some tea and later she can have the soup if she wants."
Gina nods, returning to the paper, but not before I catch her smirking. I bet she is amused. She's never seen me care about any of the other nannies. I've certainly never brought any of them tea.
Well, that's not entirely true. We had a great nanny, Mrs. Beaufort, until six months ago, but she wanted to retire to Florida with her husband. I didn't bring Mrs. Beaufort tea, but I did help her out with more practical things like her husband’s business.
I make a cup of tea for Maddie and bring it to her bedroom. I knock gently on the door.
"Come in," Maddie says. She's dressed and drying her hair with a towel.
"Hey," I say. "Brought you the tea."
"Thanks," Maddie replies with a smile, taking the cup. I can't help but smile back.
"I'm going to head to Carmen's room; you can join us there if you want or get some more rest."
"Thanks, I'll probably join you. Let me just dry my hair."
"There should be a hair dryer in the bathroom in one of the drawers."
"Ah, thanks," I'll use that then.
"Sure," I say and walk out the door again, feeling a bit funny, but also happy. How do you relate to your nanny when you just had sex with her? It's not an ideal situation. We'll have to talk about it.
As I approach Carmen's bedroom, I hear her moving around. "Hey there, sweetheart," I say softly as I nudge the door open, revealing my adorable daughter rubbing her sleepy eyes.
"Hi, Daddy," Carmen replies with a yawn, stretching her tiny limbs like a cat. Her curly hair is a tangled mess around her cherubic face.
"Did you have a nice nap?" I ask as I pick her up to hug her.
"Uh-huh," she nods, yawning again. "But I had a weird dream about a big bear chasing me."
"Really? Well, don't you worry, I'll protect you from any bears, big or small."
"This wasn't a bad bear. He was just big. But he liked candy, just like me."
I laugh. "Sounds like a nice bear."
"He was. Let's go pee."
"OK, honey, let's do that." I let her go into her bathroom, where she has a stepping stool and a special seat for her toilet and wait in the doorway.
"Well done washing your hands; you remembered this time."
Carmen beams at me. "I'm a big girl now."
