Benji had taken a silver knife and a bullet to his gut. Then he’d fought for the lives of his family. He’d done us all proud. However, it was up to the Gods whether he survived to make good on his claim. I sure hoped the Blood Moon Goddess was feeling generous tonight, for everybody’s sake.

“It’s just Silver, Louise,” I murmured, trying to soften the blow.

Addy stiffened and turned to look out the window. I knew girls as sharp as these would know what my evasion meant. The tremble Louise failed to hide in her quiet reply said it all, “Okay, Silver.”

The van lapsed into silence after that. I was stuck staring at the back of Bulletproof and his mates, Whiskey and Buzz, as they led the way.

The entire world and everything in it—even the stars—were bathed in the eerie crimson of the Chaos. Fog, thick enough that you could eat it with a spoon, rolled down from the mountains on either side and along the road, ushering the Soul Reapers MC into a surreal and lonely landscape all of our own.

* * *

Most of the van was asleep by the time we rolled up to the gates that surrounded the Soul Reaper MC’s compound. The lights that hung off the guard booth glowed a wicked yellow.

“Holy Goddess.” Deviant—the prospect who was unfortunate enough to draw guard duty that night—leaned out of the booth blatantly gawking at the people stuffed into the back of the van. “How many you got back there?”

“Enough,” Mace answered, his temper short after three hours of whining about not being able to turn on the radio. His temper was short? I wanted to shank the asshole, and I wasn’t usually the violent sort. “Thank the Goddess we’re finally home.”

“Don’t you think you can run your ass off to find Strawberry the second I park this thing,” I warned in a low snarl, but quietly so as to not wake any of our charges. “‘Cause we have a whole fuckton of things to do before you even think about getting your cock wet.”

“Can you old ladies shut up and park?” Sasha snapped, stretching her arms over her head.

The blanket she had been wearing slid off her shoulders, baring the creamy white of her skin. I swallowed the hungry growl crawling up my throat. Mace wasn’t the only one who needed to get his dick wet and my fucking mate wouldn’t make it back anytime soon.

“I got a mess of people back here who all need to pee.”

“Yes ma’am.” I saluted her reflection in my mirror and drove off to the back of the clubhouse so we could unload. “Addy, you awake, wildcat?”

“Yep,” came the sleepy reply from the back.

“When I park, you think you could run into the clubhouse with Mace? Help him find our friend Doc?”

“Why?” her mussed hair poked up from behind the last row of seats as she peered at me suspiciously. “He any good?”

Louise backed her up. “What is this Doc gonna be able to do for our Benji?”

“Yup,” I grinned, popping my “p” back at the duo. “Doc has plenty of experience treating silver and bullet wounds. Un-fucking-fortunately. He’ll patch him up real good.”

I parked right by the back doors, pocketing the keys before I kicked the driver’s door open and addressed my charges who’d tensed. Wariness and hopeless exhaustion pasted on their faces.

“Everyone else? This is our stop. Please proceed into the building in an orderly fashion. You will find bathrooms to your left and straight ahead is the bar. Drinks are on the house.”

“At least this place doesn’t look like a stiff wind will knock it the fuck over,” Sasha grumbled as she scooted over in her seat. Her eyes, like a lightning bolt, struck mine briefly in the rearview mirror before she opened both doors and ushered her people out.

In her own little world, Winter floated gracefully out after them, eyes distant. Carbon parked my ride and quietly fell in behind her. Watching her six but giving her plenty of space.

A scream from inside pulled my attention to the clubhouse. I was already running before my brain caught up to my thoughts. However, despite my natural speed, Sasha dashed in front of me. Her bare feet barely missed the broken beer bottles littering the pavement as she charged to the screamer’s aid.

Inside, most of the former captives were huddled near the door, but I knew immediately where the scream had come from. In the booth closest to the door, Mace was doing his best to keep Addy and Talia calm. Benji had been laid on the table as Doc and Checkers were quietly preparing to get to work on treating the prospect’s injuries.

A group of club girls and members were surrounding the fallen wolf, clearly wanting to help, but were held in place by Addy. The little hellcat had her knife in one hand and Mongrel’s big ass gun in the other as she laid down the law.

For now, Grimm was watching on with interest from across the room, giving Doc a chance to do his thing. Sasha slowed in front of me and came to a stop. I pulled up behind her.

“Nope. Sorry, Doc, but Benji is not leaving our sight and we—” Addy motioned between her group and the rest of the rescued humans, “—stick together.”

Doc, who’d been part of the club for longer than almost anyone, took it all in his stride. He’d ridden out a Chaos or two in his time and had already picked up on the dynamics at play. “Understandable. This is Checkers, she will be assisting me.”

The girl gave the pack nurse and midwife a quick once over and nodded. “Swell. Everyone else can back the fuck off my family. The only one who touches Benji is Doc,” Addy growled. “Feel me?”
