Gingerly, I rolled over and slipped under the covers with Sasha, curling my body around hers.

Nuzzling her neck, I breathed in her heavenly scent and enjoyed the way she did the same for me, offering a low whine of pleasure. Slowly, the anxious frown eased from our mate’s face, and her breathing fell into a more natural rhythm.

Through the bond, I could feel her wolf still scrambling about in Sasha’s soul for purchase. Trying to find her place. I sent that magnificent creature a gentle wave of reassurance. Just a small nudge, inviting her to curl up with me awhile.

With a gusty sigh, her wolf flopped gratefully down at my side.

Everything’s gonna be alright, I murmured to the silver beauty in my mind. We are together. We are safe.

Filtering in through the murky windows of the infirmary, the blood red moonlight greeted me when I woke.

Good, we hadn’t slept too long.

Though my ribs still ached from their recent healing, my wolf was well rested. Sasha’s warm body was tucked into the curve of mine. The steady rhythm of her breathing settled me, reassured me that all was well. The nightmare was over.

Sash’a wolf was strong, the perfect match for our fearsome alpha, and the silver beauty was healing the hurt away.

“Finally. Thought you two would sleep all day,” Viola yawned, uncurling herself from a chair in the corner. She dropped her book and stretched. “Hungry?”

I was about to decline, but my stomach got in first, outing me with a shockingly loud gurgle.

“Food sounds good.” I scratched the back of my neck and looked over. Viola and Sasha had formed a bond that went beyond friendship and pack. She was my mate's second in command—and everyone deferred to her as such—which made her special. “You want help?”

“Nah. Stay here. Cook’s been stress baking. Plus, I’ve never seen so much meat in one place.” Viola cracked her neck. “Cook’s plenty pissed about Jubilee and she’s taking it out on the food. Still, we’ll have some awesome pastries tomorrow, so nobody’s complaining.”

“Got ya. So, roast beef, potatoes smashed to within an inch of their lives, and a good selection of sausages tonight, right?” Yum. My mouth watered remembering Cook’s last hissy fit. That woman could get more riled up then a rattlesnake in the heat of the summer but her cooking only got better for it. “Swing a double serving of everything for me, yeah? Tell her I was injured protecting our little alpha. She’ll hook me right up.”

“Will do, boss.”

Viola gave me a cheeky salute and then hopped out of the room. It was good to see her relaxed, things must be settling in the rest of the compound.

Me? I was still rattled to my core. Couldn’t stop replaying that fucking moment in my mind. When Venom had her by the throat and I couldn’t do shit about it. More than anything, I wanted my mate to open her emerald green eyes and pull me close. However, I hadn’t been lying to Grimm. She needed to rest. Still, the silence in the room was too heavy for my liking.

“I ever tell you about how Mongrel and I got together?” I tucked a strand of her ebony hair behind her ear, begging her eyelashes to flutter. “It's not a super exciting story or anything, but it's ours.”

Rubbing the crown of her head, I relished the way her scent had changed. Fur rippled under her usual scent, warming my insides. My wolf was elated that his mate smelled like us now. She was stronger and tougher than ever.

“I mean, it was through the club, of course.” I huffed a small chuckle. “Things at my old pack were bad. Like really bad. I was just a dirty weakling to them. That was before I made it to Grimm’s doorstep. The Prez took me in, made me pack, and showed me that omegas had a special role to play.”

I had been a living nightmare, every day. My birth pack didn't treat omegas like people. We were less than. An omega or submissive only existed to serve. Whatever the dominants wanted, however they felt like treating us, no questions asked. Not quite as bad as what Sasha had been through, but close enough that shadows often chased me in my dreams.

“Anyway.” I shook off the memories, freeing my skin of those old hurts. They were in the past. And we had to look to our future. That’s what I’d learned with Grimm and Mongrel at my back. We might be a product of our past, but we shaped our own future. “So, I had been prospecting for a month or two. Mongrel wasn’t even Sgt. at Arms yet, he was just another brother, but Grimm had taken Prez. Thank the Goddess.”

Despite the warmth of my mate lying in my arms, I shivered. I’d heard the stories about what it was like before Grimm and it sounded worse than what I’d run from.

“Now, I never met his old man, but it sounds like he was a ruthless son of a bitch. I’m sure he and Venom would’ve been drinking buddies.”

I walked my fingers over the scars on my mate’s body. They were bright pink and angry but much better than they would have been if she was still human.

“So, I’d been prospecting with the Soul Reapers for a month or two, and checking out this guy. Real manly man, you know the type. A giant. Thick beard, tattoos, and a hard body that turned me inside out. He didn’t even know I existed. As a prospect, I spent my nights running chores. Never got to hang out in the bar during a party. But one night, I caught a break.”

I smirked at the memory. Sasha hadn’t seen how wild an MC club could get during a party. I was kinda looking forward to seeing her dressing down my brothers and sisters for the wilder antics of our pack. Or perhaps she’d embrace them? Time would tell.
