The evening is warm, but I still shudder as we leave the restaurant. Not that it has anything to do with the weather. Louis stays close as we walk to the car, his hand on the small of my back.

I go to open my door when I’m spun around and enveloped in his arms. The action takes my breath away, and I swallow thickly when he says, “I’m going to kiss you. Tell me now if you don’t want me to.”

I’ve been wondering what it would be like to kiss him, and now that our faces are mere inches apart, I won’t have to wonder for long.

“I’ve been wanting to do this from the moment I first saw you.”

He presses his lips to mine and my eyes drift closed, thinking that my early morning fantasy doesn’t do his kiss justice. It’s certainly more aggressive than I fantasised it would be. I let him take the lead, loving how I feel at his mercy. With every nerve in my body on fire with desire, I wrap my arms around his neck, needing more of him.

I have no idea what’s going on anymore. One shopping trip, one drink, one dinner, and one hot-as-hell kiss is starting to change everything.

With the warm sun shining down on me, I slip out of my jacket. Nothing can dampen my mood today. Not the fact that my mum is ten minutes late, or how I wanted Louis to come inside last night and fuck the shit out of me. What I got instead was another mind-blowing kiss and a “good night” at the door. Though it was frustrating, it was also sweet.

For the first night in a long time, my mind wasn’t plagued with Callum, our life together, or his car crash. I fell asleep thinking of Louis Mitchell, and I was happy.

“Mummy!”

Jumping up from the bench, my breath catches in my throat when I see Thomas running toward me. Dropping everything, I fall to my knees, ready to catch him as he flies into my arms. I hold him so tight, I have to fight not to squeeze him too hard.

“I’ve missed you, Mummy.”

Without letting him go, I pull back and cover his face with kisses. His laugh soothes the ache in my chest like a balm.

“I’ve missed you so much,” I tell him, ignoring my mum standing close by.

“Where have you been? I kept asking Nanny to call you, but she said you were too busy.”

“I was getting a new job. I’m sorry you missed me, baby, but I needed to make sure I had money so I can buy you everything.”

“Okay,” he chirps. “Can you push me on the swing?”

And just like that, he’s over it and wanting to play.

“I sure can.”

For half an hour, I push him on the swings, laugh as he slides down the slide, and wince when he shows me how he can now cross the monkey bars. It’s not until I take a breather that my mum joins us.

“How’s the job going?”

“I’ve only worked a day so far, but it’s a great salon, and the women are lovely.”

“Let’s hope you don’t mess it up,” she snipes.

Rolling my eyes, I refrain from taking the bait and lashing out at her. She’s not getting anything she could use to keep Thomas from me any longer.

“I have a job. When can Thomas come home?”

Her sigh angers me, but I manage to keep it under control. “I’ll make you a deal—”

“No deals. What I did was a mistake, one of which I’ve paid for. I have a job and food in the cupboards. His home is with me.”

“Forgive me if I worry. You resorted to shoplifting just to feed him three months ago,” she huffs. “How often will you get paid?”

“Every two weeks.”

“Then two months. Get some money in the bank after paying your bills, and I’ll let him come home to you.”

“He’s my son. There’s nothing stopping me from taking him home today.”
