Picking it up, I pluck the cap off and sniff the scent. It’s the same one she’s wearing today. It’s dark and heady, thank fuck. None of the sickly sweet floral shit some women wear.

I take note of the brand and put it back in its place. Heading back downstairs, I find she’s nearly finished packing the shopping away, and a mug of coffee is on the table for me.

Taking my seat at the table, I catch a glimpse of her bending over to put stuff away in the freezer, and then she’s standing up, collecting all the empty bags off the floor.

“I must admit, it does feel nice having the fridge and cupboards full again,” she says, joining me at the table.

“Honestly, it was no problem.”

“Does Lexi do this often? Like, spend so much money on someone she barely knows?”

This time, I give her the truth. “Before she went away, she’d do anything for anyone. As feisty as she can be, she’s always had a heart of gold. It used to drive me mad with her boyfriends. I thought they were just mugging her off, and because she was infatuated with them, she never listened to me. For her to help you, it makes me think my sister is still there, deep down, and that that place hasn’t completely stolen her.”

Nodding, she sips her tea and catches me watching her. Averting her eyes, I clear my throat and drink my bitter coffee.

I want to push my luck and just ask every question I have, but I don’t want her feeling uncomfortable, so I put my mug down and stand.

“If you need anything else, just let Lexi know.”

Her lips part, and I’m expecting her to wave my suggestion away, but all she says is, “Thank you.”

Now that her kitchen is filled with everything she needs and more, I can leave knowing she’s all good for today. But I will be back for her.
