I entered the rowdy streets with his words and warning in my head. As I slid inside the quietness of my car, the louder my mind became. I raised the volume of the stereo. Anything, to keep my thoughts distracted. It didn’t work. It wasn’t until I got home with Boris by my side that I let my mind ease, my tension relax.

Boris!

How could I not have thought about it before?

Boris had the power to bring assurance, protection, maybe even help with a restless night.

“Hey big guy, you up for an interesting task?” I asked Bo and all he gave me was a grunt, uncaring. “Yeah, I knew you would.” I chuckled.

After placing a plush blanket on the back seat of my car, I patted my leg. “Get in.” I ushered, and kept the back door open for Bo. Instead, Boris stood there, watching my hand.

Today was not the day for him to act out, but I did give him a minute to be an asshole. He deserved it because he knew what was coming once we would make it to our destination, and the muzzle in my hands confirmed it.

Bo huffed and jumped inside.

Once I got into the car, I asked, “Want some music, Bo?” Bo whined, and I took it as a yes.

The skies threatened rain as the clouds gloom darker by the minute, and with the sun hidden, the temperatures dropped to its lowest of the season. Fifty-eight degrees Fahrenheit.

Bo hated getting wet unless it was a warm bath, so I was glad by the time we got to Davina’s safe house, not a drop had fallen yet. I rushed out of the car before the pour began, and opened the back door.

“Myjesto,” I commanded Bo to stay. He froze in attention knowing play time was over. I placed his muzzle without a struggle and leashed him. Boris might get his way at home, but outside he obeyed without a fault. “Molodet.” Good boy, I praised him, running my hand over his coat. “Come, I want you to meet someone. Be nice, Bo,” I warned.

I knocked on the door and waited with Bo on all fours, calmly looking around the street behind us.

“Holy shit!” Davina gasped as she opened the door only to quickly close it.

I smiled, and looked down at Bo, who’s head was twisted to the side while his pointy ears moved, listening.

“May I remind you, you were the one who asked for the favor.”

“I changed my mind!” she hollered, making me chuckle.

I patted Bo, bringing him closer to me and whispered, “She didn’t mean that.”

“Yes, I did,” she bit back.

“Come on, Davina. He’s harmless.”

“Is that the reason his mouth is in a basket? Because he is sooo friendly?”

“It’s called a muzzle, and I only did that so you wouldn’t have to be afraid of him hurting you.”

The door slid ajar, her head peeked out. Her silk black hair hung in soft waves, framing her gentle features. With lips puckered, her doe eyes only watched Bo.

Boris quickly caught her anxiety, and he sat tilting his head down but kept his eyes on her.

“Why is he watching me as if he wants to eat me?”

“Really?” All I saw was sweet Bo trying to look gentle.

“I’ve never had a dog,” she whispered, and Bo straightened, turning his head toward the street. Following Bo’s attention, a car passed by with blasting music. Davina opened the door wider, and the sound brought Bo’s interest back to her.

“Place your palm up toward him so he can smell you. I promise, he will not harm you in any way,” I reassured her.

With a small nod, she did as I instructed, and Bo stood. She took a step back. I watched her in her black leggings and oversized hoodie as she hid her hand under the cuffs.

This was harder than I’d expected, and I wondered how far those fears of hers ran.
