“Anywhere with a flat surface?”

“Finish your drink, then, and we’ll go play.”

Caera snatched her glass when he handed it to her, her hands shaking as she brought it to her mouth and gulped the contents as fast as she could. “All done, Sir.”

Saul was willing to ride this wave with her while it lasted. She had to settle, get rid of the overabundance of jitters warring with her need to please. She might think she had him fooled into believing she was ready to charge headlong into the coming scene, but he saw through her.

She kept up the pretense, the energy-consuming smokescreen, all the way into the barn. It faltered slightly as they stepped into an already bustling area, couples in full swing despite the early hour. Fridays were definitely the best nights for voyeurs…and exhibitionists.

Her steps lost some of their bounce, her hand tightening on his.

“We have all the time in the world, Caera.”

She tugged on his hand until he bent so his ear was close to her mouth. Somewhere in the last few minutes, his little rabbit had lost her big girl voice. “Can I vote for not using that thing?”

Saul followed the direction of the finger she used to point, then smiled. “Caera, that’s a storage closet.” Although, looking at the narrow, dark space across the room with the door slightly ajar, he realized it could double as a sensory deprivation box with a few minor alterations. “We’re sticking with simple tonight, remember? Bondage, butt plug, fucking. Three basic elements combined to make you a very satisfied woman.”

“Simple,” she whispered. “Basic.”

Stroking a hand over her hip, he went through the traffic light system of safewords again, making her repeat them back to him before they ventured any further. Some of her confidence returned on the fourth repetition, as though it reminded her she had a large portion of control. “What color are you now?”

“Green.”

“All right, stick with me. It’s busy tonight.” Knowing exactly which piece of apparatus he wanted to take advantage of tonight, Saul wound his way through the various play areas, past crosses and spanking benches, to a secluded part of the barn near the back corner.

The equipment was simply a square built of metal pipes. Six feet high, with bars at various angles for more complex positions, it had the option of a padded shelf that slotted into place at different heights. A sub could be on her knees, her torso laid flat, or she could be on her tiptoes with her arms stretched across the platform.

A quick glance at Caera showed that she was more curious than afraid, which was an excellent step in the right direction.

“What does this do?” she asked.

“Keeps you exactly where I put you, so I can make you fly.” Squeezing her fingers, he released her, nudging her forward. “I need to get a few things from the cupboard. Take a minute and familiarize yourself with the equipment. Touch it, see how sturdy it is. I’ll be back.”

“You’re leaving me here with that?”

Saul stifled his laugh, gently turning her to the left. “Bunny, I’m literally going to be ten feet away. No chance I’m leaving you anywhere with this rabble—tasty, delicious little bunnies should never be left unattended in a room full of hungry wolves.”

Caera shivered. “There’s only one wolf for me.”

Oh, she was thinking along the right lines. If he got his way, he would be the only wolf she would ever have. “Keep reading my mind, little rabbit, and you’ll know all my secrets. That’s a very…dangerous…game to play.”

Like the ruffle of a peacock’s feathers, she let a sliver of bravado shimmer free as she glanced over her shoulder at him. Licking her lips, she told him, “Seems fair when you know mine inside out. I’m starting to believe that there’s no one else who could’ve saved me from myself. One person in all the world who could make me feel…seen. I was invisible before you came along, fading into the shadows. There’s only you who can convince me I’m alive when I feel like I don’t exist.”

So often, she rendered him helpless. Not the most comfortable sensation for a Dominant, but it was certainly humbling to realize that she could cut him off at the knees with her honesty. He felt privileged to understand how hard it was for her to be open about her pain, and to be the one she could express herself to when needed.

Spinning her around, Saul grasped her face in his hands, stroking her cheekbones with his thumbs. The beauty of her bone structure was no less striking now that they weren’t as prominent. “Bad people made you believe you weren’t worthy of existing, Caera, but the truth is they’re the ones who don’t deserve to be alive. If loving you opens your eyes to how much you’re treasured, then I’ll just have to spend every day doing just that, so you don’t forget.”

“Sometimes all you have to do is look at me,” she admitted. “One look, just like the one you’re giving me now, and I feel…whole. That’s not something I’ll ever forget, Saul.”

He kissed her then, seriously considering foregoing the scene and skipping straight to stripping her naked. Ropes and floggers and nipple clamps were merely a dusting of glitter on a mouthwatering cake—and his favorite cake was sweet, decadent, and utterly addictive.

“There will never be a time when you don’t feel loved again,” he said earnestly, ending the kiss gently. If he didn’t step away now, the night would not end the way he planned. “I’ll get what I need from the cupboard. Leave your clothes on until I get back, little rabbit. I’ll take care of them myself.”

Inch by inch, he thought. Peeling away the layers, starting with her clothes and ending with stripping her emotions bare.

“O-Okay.”

As he strode over to the supply cabinet to pick out his toys for the night, Saul thanked God for whoever had set Caera’s destiny on the same path as his. Maybe he should get Connie a token of his appreciation for playing goddamn matchmaker.
