“No, no,” Devin mumbled on a long sigh, head flopping as she tried to shake it in negation. She took the pills. Did what she always had, tried to stay safe. Beau slid the needle into her. It wasn’t her fault.

“I know, it’s not your fault. The bad suppressants are still out there. You didn’t know they were tainted. You did what you were supposed to.”

“Y-You don’t blame me?” Devin sniffed, forcing her chin up from her chest. Caution thrown to the wind, she dared to look the Alpha in the eye. Searching for the truth of it in the deep brown of his eyes, she wanted to cry when he shushed her and nodded.

“You have to eat for me now.”

Devin wanted to. Tried. Coughed and choked, gagging on every sip Rey tipped down her throat. His frustration grew as each attempt became more difficult for her, growling when Devin tried to topple herself from his lap when she thought she’d be sick.

“Fuck it,” Rey husked against the fluffy crown of her hair.

Devin didn’t understand what he meant as he pulled her closer. Arms tightening around her middle, he made her ribs scream in violent purple fury. Maybe this was the end. Too much trouble when she couldn’t swallow whatever he was forcing down her throat. Gods, what if it’d been drugged, and now he was going to kill her?

Panic swelled and faded within a single breath. Devin had no fight left to her, not while her skin itched and crawled. Too tight, twisting over muscle and bone as it suffocated her.

The deep thunder ushered in a quietness Devin didn’t grasp at first. Calm descended in inky waves as it came louder, reverberating against her side. It flowed all around her along with heat and strength. Thick muscles and heavy limbs kept Devin in a tremulous pocket of safety. Lies, all of it, but on the next rumbling purr from him, she didn’t care.

Bones turning liquid, she puddled in his lap. Hair swept back as he settled her against his arm, her broken hum grated through the perfect resonance. She didn’t struggle as he placed the deli cup against her lips, swallowing with greedy gulps the salty yellow broth. She’d do anything for that deep thunder, just so long as it never stopped.

She emptied the cup long before she could claim any awareness. A bottle followed, swirling the decadent flavors of chicken and vegetables around her tongue as she sipped chilled water. Time slipped on before her vision cleared, the dark haze solidifying into the office. The shadows cradling her becoming Rey, the rich perfection of the purr pummeling the ache in her side. It never let up as he pushed another bottle of water against her lips.

“Drink some more, sweetheart,” he husked, thumb traveling the length of her throat as Devin did as she was told.

Still dazed, lost in the fog that deep reverberation kept her in, Devin didn’t understand when Rey set the bottle aside and carried her to the space against the wall that reeked of pain and terror. Even less when he abandoned her there. Rey snatched away the calming purr, leaving her desolate and alone on the gritty, cold floorboards.

“Try to sleep.”

There was no chance to close her eyes. Beau strolled through the door with a cocky grin aimed at Devin. Focus tight on the Omega curled up on the floor groveling at his feet, he paused a moment to view the damage he’d done. His smile widened as he grabbed Devin’s arm and hauled her to her feet, pretending she didn’t hiss in pain and that helpless tears didn’t spill over her clumped lashes.

“Were you a good girl for Mr. Rey, hmm?”

“Not here, Beau,” Rey ground out, eyeing the open door.

“All right, all right.” Beau laughed, the sound deep and amiable though he pushed and shoved Devin around to view her from all sides.

He poked and prodded her bruised body. Rough with her as Rey watched on, doing nothing. Somehow, that hurt more than the fingers Beau dug into her ribs, jerking her into his side. Cinnamon coated the back of her throat. The comfort of luxurious coffee turning bitter and scorched, drowning her in the next breath dragged her focus to Rey’s narrowed umber gaze. Wild eyes swung up to Beau, understanding of his deranged grin dawning on her.

Whatever he’d given her, it was wearing off.

“Time to go, baby.” Beau chuckled, delighted to see her fear, loving that she understood the power he held.

Devin nodded. Half running beside the Alpha as his long strides carried him faster than she could ever walk. At the top of the stairs, she swore she wouldn’t look back. She could feel it, though, all the way down, more intense as Beau’s hand slipped beneath the too short dress to grip her ass.

She gave in as Beau opened the outside door. She glanced back once, seeing Rey at the landing, his hands twisting the metal of the banister. Watching, doing nothing to stop Beau, letting him drag Devin out into the night.

“Get down here,” Beau snarled, wasting no time once they were inside the low sports car waiting at the door. The front of his slacks undone, he grabbed the back of Devin’s head and shoved, pushing her face into his lap. Revving the engine, making it scream with unrestrained power, he reached over her back to work the stick shift. “Better make me come before we hit the warehouse or you’re in for it.”

They both knew it wouldn’t matter what she did. He’d play his games whether she accomplished the impossible task or not. Still, Devin took a deep breath and opened her mouth wide to take his pulsing shaft.
