“Stop it! Let me go.”

“Shh, I’m not hurting you. We’re almost done.”

Her boot clattered to the floor, followed by the next, leaving Devin’s legs vulnerable. The backs of his fingers trailed over her calf and knee, grazing the tops of her thighs. His touch was anything but innocent, yet he acted as if he did nothing wrong. Large hands engulfed her hips, setting Devin on her feet between the Alpha’s spread thighs. Held immobile in that solid grip, she couldn’t shuffle away, no matter how her heels dug into the plush rug.

He smiled up at her, equal parts charming and evil, as blue eyes sparkled with mischief. “Now, isn’t that better?”

“Let me go,” Devin said in a low hiss, hands curling into tight fists at her sides. She was shaking with far more than fear now as anger welled up to choke her.

“Only trying to help, sweetheart.” He released her with a roll of broad shoulders, letting Devin stumble back until she caught herself on a chair.

She had to swallow back a wail of dismay as she took in her surroundings. The room was lavish, filled with buttery leather and dark wood. Some sort of private meeting area, the door shut them even further away from the bustle downstairs.

If she screamed, no one would hear her.

“Listen, I appreciate your help earlier,” she began, edging around the chair to put the solid piece of furniture between her and the male. “But my friend is probably wondering where I am, and I should just go home now.”

“It’d be irresponsible of me to let you walk out of here like this.” He leaned against a sideboard near the door, loose and easy, though his predatory gaze watched her every move. Too big, too muscled by far, he blocked the exit from feet away. A lazy flick of his fingers indicated another door on the wall behind her. “There’s a bathroom there. If you give me your friend’s name and description, I’ll get one of the guys to bring her up.”

“Her name’s Ashley. Tall, blonde, with a blue shirt and tight jeans. She’s an Alpha. The woman tending bar, with the hair, she might remember her.”

“Sure, no problem,” he said, nodding as his hand went to his hip. Thumbing the little box, his lips turned up in what was meant to be irresistible reassurance, he repeated what Devin had told him.

Shifting her weight from one foot to the other, she watched the man from the corner of her eye. She didn’t trust him one bit, but he backed off for now. As soon as Ashley arrived to run interference, Devin could get the hell out.

And return early tomorrow afternoon to make sure she was first in line. Some asshole bouncer wasn’t going to keep her from the pay range the woman on the phone promised. She could only hope he didn’t mention this whole fiasco to the owners, or if he did, that they understood it wasn’t her fault. She prayed for the former, knowing the latter was beyond foolish at this point.

“Hey!” Leaning forward, the male snapped his fingers hard to get her attention.

“What?” Painted lips curled up into a snarl of irritation at the man, startled from her seething train of thought.

“You going to clean up or what?”

“I’ll wait.”

“I suggest you rethink that.”
