Sloane gave me that soft smile that normally set off butterflies in my middle. This time, it just gnawed at me.

His grin faltered as he approached. “Hey, baby,” he murmured. “I told you, you don’t have to wait in line. You can come around the back and I’ll—”

“No, thanks.” I brushed past him, heading for the front car, but he followed while the other riders were loading.

“Gia, is something wrong?”

When my safety belt was fastened, I looked up at him. “We need to talk.” I swear his face blanched, and I hated thinking about what that might mean.

Was he guilty of this awful thing?

“Now?” he asked, glancing nervously away. “We can go into the control room for privacy. Jeff and Todd can handle the ride.”

“No.” I wasn’t ready to talk yet. Not ready to know the truth. I needed to prepare for the worst.

And apparently I was going to do that by riding a dumb rollercoaster. “Later. We’ll talk later.”

Sloane was silent for what seemed like ages before he muttered, “Okay.”

I stared forward as the ride took off, and by the time we’d lugged up to the first drop, tears were spilling down my cheeks. I let them fall freely since no one could see anyway. I’d get it all out now so that when I talked to Sloane, there would be none to cry.

When the car pulled into the station, I spotted him at the control panel, arms crossed over his chest, a deep frown marring his features. His eyes were on me immediately, but this time he looked angry. Furious. Like he could harden a foe to stone with nothing more than a spare glance.

I kept my eyes forward until the ride stopped. Every passenger was unloaded before I dared to look around. The next batch of riders was ready to go, but Sloane hadn’t opened the gate yet.

He crouched beside my car, waiting until I found his livid eyes. “You think I did this?” He shoved his phone at me, revealing the very same article Helena had read.

“Did you?” I asked him, point blank.

He blinked as if I’d slapped him. “How can you ask me that? I didn’t even know about it until Jeff searched the internet for a ‘reason the pretty lady might be mad’.”

Okay. But he still didn’t answer the question.

“Did you share our personal messages?” I practically choked on the words, tears threatening to spill again.

Sloane’s shoulders fell as he let out a long sigh. “Come with me, Gia.”

I had no choice but to follow him to the control room, completely unsure if I would leave there with my heart intact.
