He dragged me along the cement platform until we turned a corner and found a door. Fumbling briefly, he retrieved an electronic key card from his wallet and waved it in front of the lock. Quickly, he pulled me through the door and it slammed shut behind us.

I thought we’d keep walking, but we didn’t.

Sloane rounded on me, pulling me into a bone-crushing hug as he held me there.

My gut churned.

Was he waiting for me to say something? I didn’t know what to say.

No words would come to correctly convey how sorry I was to put him in that position. And the longer I fought to find the right way to apologize, the longer he stood there, his arms gripping me against him… wait..

Not judging.

Not asking a damn thing of me.

Just letting me be there.

Saying it was okay.

I realized he wasn’t waiting for me to say anything. He wasn’t waiting for an apology at all.

He was comforting me.

Once I got past that hurdle, I felt the first tear fall.
