Page 47 of A Hero For Heather

He was starting to wonder what he was doing here when a doctor came in through the doors. “Mr. and Mrs. Davis,” the doctor said. He recognized the guy from the accident earlier who’d helped him get Daisy out of the car. Damn, what a small world. “Heather is going to be fine. She had what we call a severely displaced fracture to her tibia and fibula. I’ve repaired it and put a plate in her leg. We’ve got a soft cast on her now to check for healing of the incision. Her ankle wasn’t broken, just sprained which will heal faster than the rest of her leg. She’ll be here a few days and then we’ll put a cast on for six to eight weeks. Depends on how quickly she heals, but we’ll take x-rays before it comes off. Then we’ll have a soft cast or splint on for another month or two and crutches until we know she is fully healed. She’s young and in good physical condition and healthy, so with any luck she’ll have a full recovery and be back to her normal life in a few months as if nothing happened.”

A few months! Jesus, if her parents took her home he wouldn’t see her for that long.

No, he had to tell himself she wouldn’t want to go. No way. She wouldn’t give up her job even if her parents wanted her to. She could sit and work.

He was keeping his mouth closed though.

“Can we go see her?” Jill asked.

“The nurse will be in soon and you can go see her in recovery. They are going to try to wake her up slowly. She’s going to be in pain from the concussion and surgery.”

“Thank you so much,” Max said. “Will you be the doctor she will follow up with? We didn’t catch your name.”

“Dr. Theo James,” Theo said, shaking their hands. “Yes, she can come back to see me. I’m based out of here.”

“You’re so young,” Jill said.

Theo grinned. “Thanks, I think.”

Theo turned to leave and caught his eye. “Damn, you said you knew her. Guess she got lucky today.”

“What?” Daisy said. “When did you two meet?”

Theo looked over and his gaze stayed on Daisy. “This hero pulled her out of the car when it was catching on fire. I grabbed Heather’s purse so I could get an ID.”

“Fire?” Jill screeched. Guess no one told her the facts or maybe Daisy didn’t know them herself.

Luke shook his head. “Don’t let him kid you. He helped me get her out and then examined her the minute I laid her down. I told everyone to get back and he stayed.”

“Doctors do those things,” Theo said. “I wanted her ID, but this guy… Don’t know your name.”

“Luke Remington,” he said, putting his hand out.

Theo shook it. “This guy pushed everyone back and went in and nothing was stopping him. He knew her when I turned her over.”

“How do you know our daughter?” Max asked, looking at him.

Daisy spoke up before him. “Luke was Zane’s best man at Lily’s wedding. She met him at the wedding and then the Christmas party when he moved here.”

“Oh,” Jill said. “Then I guess we owe you both a lot for being on the scene and getting Heather the care she needed right away. I can’t imagine what would have happened if she didn’t get out fast enough.”

Luke looked at Theo. Part of him didn’t want to think of that either.

He nodded his head. He didn’t want to overstay his welcome and would check in tomorrow if he could.

Saved Her Life

Heather felt herself fighting through a cloud of confusion and pain.

Her mouth was dry and her head hurt like hell.

“Heather,” she heard in the distance. “Come on and open your eyes.”

She had no idea who was talking to her or why. All she remembered was being at work and leaving to bring flowers to Daisy at the retail shop. Everything else was a blur.

She blinked a few times and tried to focus, then heard the beeping and turned her head to see a machine. “Am I in a hospital?”
