Or maybe not.

She was so confused and just had to get past that.

She gathered what she needed, then drove to Luke’s, arriving a few minutes before six.

“Hey,” he said. “Found it okay I see.”

“It’s not hard to find things around here.” She pushed the bakery box in front of him. “I’ve got some brownies and cupcakes. They are cold, as they’ve sat in my car. I didn’t want Daisy to see them and wonder what was going on.”

He frowned again. A look came over his face that confused her but still made him handsome as all hell. “Are you embarrassed to be with me?”

“God no,” she said again. Wow, she was good at putting her foot in her mouth with him.

Never Be Enough

Luke was trying not to regret asking Heather over tonight. He’d be starting the academy on Monday and wouldn’t be around much. About five months or so of driving a little more than an hour each way. Leaving before seven and getting home after seven.

He was used to twelve-hour days. He didn’t sleep much, but in that time he’d have to do things around the house or take care of it on the weekends.

That didn’t leave a lot of time for him to be in communication with a woman unless it was at night.

It’s not like he could be texting during the day on breaks or anything like that. But he’d have the weekends.

Now listening to her trying to hide the fact she was coming here from even her roommate made him feel once again like he’d never be enough for someone.

That his white trash upbringing was going to pull him down into the murky water that he was trying to float to the top from.

Being a good swimmer didn’t seem to make a difference though.

“Just checking,” he said when she all but shouted the ‘God no’ again.

“Listen,” she said. “This is awkward for me.”

“What is?” he asked.

He held his hand out for her coat when she took it off. Her hair was pulled back letting him see her sharp cheekbones and light blue eyes. Eyes that were haunting him for longer than ever before. Her shirt was black and fitted to her body. Just a cotton one showing her breasts silhouetted the way he remembered in his mind. Her jeans were dark blue and of stretchy material with ankle boots on that gave her another shot of sexy.

It was funny how she looked so different in the store earlier and yet here in casual clothes she was just as he remembered when she had on a dress or skirt.

“I’ve never had a one-night stand before.”

“Oh,” he said. “That was a long time ago.”

“It was,” she said. “And I’m here again so I’m not sure what is going through your mind.”

He could see that from her point of view. “I’m not thinking of anything more than having a steak and a beer. Though I’ve got fries too and a bag of veggies somewhere in the freezer if you want.”

She laughed at him. “Really?”

He was seeing a vulnerable side he hadn’t expected. Then reminded himself he didn’t know her all that well. Just like she didn’t know him.

“Yep,” he said. “Instead of being alone tonight, we are two people having steak and a beer. Can I get you one now? The TV is on and playing one of those lame shows, the best of the year type thing.”

She laughed. “I used to love watching them when I was a kid.”

“Then we’ll keep it on,” he said. It might give them something to talk about because right now he was feeling awkward too. He wasn’t one to invite a woman to his place for a date. If they came over it was for sex and then she left after most times.
