EMILIA

Idrank a large mouthful of water as I sat back in my chair and stared at the monitor. I’d been going through my emails for a few hours now and had managed to sort through the majority of them, but for every email I dealt with five more arrived in my inbox that needed my attention.

I glanced over at Jase’s empty desk through the open door which divided our offices and sighed. He’d been in a meeting downstairs for several hours now, and I found myself wishing it would end right that moment so he’d come back up here and I could kiss him.

The corners of my mouth turned up as I thought of the man who was my entire world. Best friend. Business partner. Lover. Jason Oliver Bennett was everything to me.

There was a knock on my door and I looked up. “Someone’s a lucky girl.” Marian came striding in with a big smile on her face, a gift bag in hand. “This very special delivery just arrived for you.”

My mouth fell open as I looked at what she was holding. Anyone who’d ever been to Paris and had indulged in macarons from Pierre Hermé’s famous patisserie would have recognized the gift bag with the leaf-shaped holes punched out of it.

She placed the bag on my desk and left me alone. I stood and very carefully removed the seal holding the bag closed at the top before peering inside. A small envelope sat on top of a long, rectangular box. I took the envelope out and opened it. Inside was a card upon which a short message was inscribed in beautiful penmanship.

Je t’aime, Emilia.

Jase xxx

Those four little words made my heart beat faster and I felt like the luckiest girl in the world. Jase was such an incredible partner: thoughtful, generous, sweet. I put down the card, unable to wipe the smile off my face, and extracted the box.

When I opened it, twelve different flavored macarons were carefully displayed inside it.

I knew some of the flavors by sight. Jasmine and wild strawberry. Black lemon. Milk chocolate and passionfruit. Madagascar vanilla. Each and every one of them was delicious, and every time we’d traveled to Paris, I’d always picked up a box to bring home.

I breathed in the scent of the delicious cookie-like confections and my heart skipped a beat.

That Jase had arranged this, had shipped a box of macarons all the way from Paris just for me, made me want to kiss the hell out of him. I glanced over at his desk once more, wanting him to be sitting behind it now more than ever, before I put down the box and picked up the card again.

I read the words over and over. He loved me. Someone in a patisserie in Paris had written the words ‘I love you, Emilia’ on the card before placing it in the bag with my macarons and sending it halfway across the world. Someone in Paris knew Jase loved me.

I put the card down on top of the box and blinked as tears welled up. My love for the man with whom I shared my life threatened to overwhelm me, and I swiped at my eyes.

“What’s wrong, Em?”

I’d been so caught up in my emotions I hadn’t even noticed Jase return to the office. He was standing by his desk, his notepad and pen on the edge of it, a concerned look on his face. I turned toward him as he strode over to me.

His hands framed my face and tipped my head back a little so our gazes could meet. “Are you okay, sweetheart?”

I slid my arms around his waist and nodded, brushing my lips against his. “I’m fine, Jase. Just a little overwhelmed.”

“By?”

“By how lucky I am to have you in my life.”

He grinned and put his arms around me. “Well, that’s true. You are.” His lips touched mine. “Why are you feeling lucky in particular right now?”

“Might have something to do with a special delivery from Paris.”

“Ah, the macarons arrived.”

“Yes, they did.” I pressed kisses along his jaw. “Thank you so much, honey. You didn’t have to do that.”

He rubbed my back. “I know, but we’ve been so fucking busy these last couple of weeks you deserve a treat.”

“Jase?”

His deep blue eyes looked into mine. “Hmm?”
