I looked over at the doctor, who was now standing on the right side of my bed. He extracted a slim black flashlight from his coat pocket and leaned over me, shining it briefly in my eyes. “Apart from the broken arm, you’ve also broken three ribs and have a concussion.”

He made some notes on the clipboard. “The breaks will heal, but it’s the head trauma we’re most concerned about. You’ve had an MRI and I couldn’t see any bleeding or serious injury, but I’m going to keep you here overnight, just in case.”

“Can I stay here with him?”

Dr. Cornett’s case swung over to Emilia. “Are you his wife?”

“Partner.” She didn’t elaborate, and I didn’t give a fuck if anyone at the hospital thought she was my wife. I wanted her by my side.

“Yes, you can stay, Miss…?”

“Emilia Quinn.”

I watched as he narrowed his eyes at her, then looked down at the clipboard. Our names obviously rang a bell, but he didn’t ask anything further. “I’ll get a bed brought in for you.”

She nodded. I was clearly in an expensive private room, given its size. There was plenty of room for a fold-out bed, although I suspected it wouldn’t be required.

“I need to take Mr. Bennett for a few more tests, so now would be a good time for you to head home and grab what you’ll need. He should be back here by the time you return.”

“Thank you, Dr. Cornett.” She managed a watery smile. “Please take good care of him while I’m gone.”

“We will. I’ll be back in five minutes.” He stepped out of the room to give us some privacy, and once the door closed Emilia turned back to me. “I’m just going to go home, get changed, and pack an overnight bag for the two of us. I’ll be back as soon as I can, promise.”

She leaned over me and pressed her lips to mine in a sweet kiss. “Do what the doctor tells you. Love you.” She was gone before I could say anything, and I closed my eyes against the pounding in my head and the heaviness in my arm and chest.

When I opened my eyes again, Emilia was sitting in a large chair next to me. Her thumbs were moving rapidly across the screen of her phone, which meant she was probably typing an email.

She was now dressed in jeans and a plain pink tee underneath a loose light gray sweater I knew was mine. Her long, dark wavy hair had been pulled up into a bun, and ruby studs adored her ears. They’d been a Christmas gift from me a few years back.

“Hi, beautiful.”

Emilia’s head snapped up and she immediately abandoned her phone, tossing it onto the top of the Louis Vuitton bag which sat next to the chair. “Hey, you’re awake.” She stood and came over to sit on the side of the bed, her fingers curling around mine. “How are you feeling?”

My head felt groggy. “I’m not sure.”

Her free hand came up and she stroked my cheek with the backs of her fingers. “I’m not surprised. They’ve got you on some strong painkillers.”

“That bad, huh?”

“You hit your head pretty hard.” She bit her lip, her eyes swimming with tears. “You could have died.” She choked, unable to find her voice for a few moments. “I could have lost you.”

Fuck. The ache in my heart threatened to overshadow the pain I felt everywhere else. I lifted my right arm up and she climbed onto the bed, lying down next to me. I put it around her, holding her close, and she carefully curled up into my side. The injuries I’d sustained were all on the left side, so it didn’t hurt to have her close.

“You could never lose me.” My voice was raspy. “I plan to stick around forever.”

She said nothing for a few moments, instead turning her head to kiss my shoulder. “Promise?”

I gazed directly into her eyes. “I promise, Em.”

She kissed me then, and it felt like…more. Everything.

I must have let out a moan because she raised herself up, a worried look on her face. “Are you okay? Did I hurt you?”

“No, you didn’t.” I stroked her lower back. “I’m glad you’re here.”

“Me, too.” Lying back down, she nestled close and let out a sigh. “What am I going to do with you, Jason Bennett?”

“Spank me?”
