JASE

It was close to six on a Friday night a month later when I noticed Emilia standing in the doorway between our offices. She’d changed into a short white dress, the hem of which skimmed her knees, and her hair which had been up in a bun all day was now flowing loosely around her shoulders.

“You look beautiful. Going out somewhere?”

She tutted, the corners of her mouth curling up. “I’m meeting Victoria, remember?”

“Ah, yes.” It had completely slipped my mind, but now she mentioned it, I remembered she’d told me about it earlier in the week. Victoria was back home in between business trips, so the girls had arranged a night out. I was glad, because it had been several months now since Emilia had split from her douchebag ex, and she deserved a night of fun.

We stayed at the Nolan properties when we traveled, and Victoria always ordered any toys or lingerie she wanted from us directly, as we arranged private delivery for her wherever she was.

“We’re just going to hang out at Meteor, so we can have some privacy but dance if we want to.”

“Have a good time. Give Vic my love.”

“Will do. See you at home.”

She disappeared with a wave and I stared in the direction she’d gone, long after she’d vanished from sight. Shaking my head to snap out of my reverie, I went back to work.

An hour later, I gave up. My brain had switched off for the week and all I wanted was to head home for a meal and a drink. Stuart was waiting underneath the building for me, and once he dropped me off, he headed home to await Emilia’s text for pick up.

I changed into sweats and a tee when I got home, then dropped onto the sofa in front of the television to watch some basketball. One meal, a couple of beers, and three hours later, it was just after ten and I was ready for bed when my phone rang.

I swiped to answer. “Hello, dear.”

Emilia giggled. “Hi, honey!”

“Who are you talking to?” The distinctive voice I heard could only have belonged to one person. “Jason Bennett, is that you?”

“Hello, Victoria. How are you?”

“Distraught.” She’d obviously taken Emilia’s phone because I could hear her more clearly.

“Why are you distraught?”

“Because your very fine ass is not here with us. You need to come to the club right now, mister!”

I chuckled. “I thought you were having a girls’ night out?”

“Hmm, yes. We are.” There was a pause while the two women spoke over the top of each other drunkenly. “We’ve decided to make you an honorary girl. Now hurry up! We need your help.”

I wasn’t worried about rushing there. The ladies were completely safe at Meteor because they were in our private room, and I knew Victoria would have someone from her security team with her. She never went anywhere without a bodyguard, an unfortunate but necessary part of being a well-known billionaire.

“Okay, fine. Give me ten minutes to get changed. See you soon.”

Victoria made kissy noises into the phone before the line went dead. I changed into black pants and a blue shirt, rolling up the sleeves and keeping the top couple of buttons undone.

Once I arrived at the club, I headed straight upstairs to our room, where I found Emilia and Victoria standing at the large glass window overlooking the nightclub’s enormous dance floor downstairs. At the sound of the door closing behind me, they both turned around.

“About time!” The feisty redhead sauntered over to me shakily on heels that looked as tall as she was, making Emilia cackle like a schoolgirl. “Kiss me, you handsome devil.”

Yep, they were both drunk as skunks. I leaned over and pressed a brief kiss to her pursed lips, wrapping my arms around her for a hug.

Victoria Nolan may only have been five foot three, but I pitied the fool who underestimated her. I’d seen her in action in the boardroom, and she’d eaten grown men for breakfast. Tough and unrelenting, she was intelligent, shrewd, and an excellent judge of character.

She took a long time to warm up to people, but once she did, she was a loyal, dependable friend, and both Emilia and I enjoyed her company.
