“I mean…”

I paid for it without speaking. “Do you have a bathroom I can use?”

“Of course, honey.” She walked me into the back, to a bathroom that definitely wasn’t supposed to be for customer use. I was grateful for her pity, though. Before closing the door behind me, she smiled. “It’ll be okay. Either way.”

“Thank you.”

I locked the door behind me and negotiated the strange task of peeing on a pregnancy test stick.

Once that was done, the waiting began — the longest few minutes of my life. I paced back and forth, trying not to check the timer on my phone, just waited for it to go off.

I couldn’t take it any longer, though. I looked at the test. The control was bright pink and next to it…

It was early yet, but there it was. The ghost of a second pink line. I stared and stared. The pink got darker and darker.

And I was…

I was pregnant.

Simple and unceremonious.

One million thoughts popped into my head. How could I afford a baby? What would my mom and dad say? What would Katie say? Most importantly, would Wesley be upset?

What was I supposed to do? And why hadn’t I been more careful?

And though my stomach bottomed out in fear, my heart sang with joy, more powerful than my panic. My eyes welled with tears.

Nothing in my life had ever felt more right than knowing I was pregnant with Wesley Taves’s baby.

I had to tell him as soon as possible. I needed to know if our love could continue to grow with this…unexpected joy.

Or if I’d have to do it alone.

Chapter28

Wesley

I lingered at work and drove home slowly, even circling the block before I got the courage to finally park. It was already a quarter past seven. I couldn’t keep Cara and Lucy waiting any longer.

I knew the second I saw them, though, my heart was going to break.

As soon as I walked into the house, I wished I could have turned around.

I head Lucy’s feet scrambling across the floor before I saw her. “Daddy!”

When she emerged from the living room, it took everything in me not to burst into tears. My little girl with her beautiful blonde hair, curious brown eyes, and bold grin with missing teeth…my little girl.

What would I do if Lisbeth took her from me? First for just a little bit of time…then completely…

I couldn’t lose her.

I dropped to my knees and opened my arms wide for her. She slammed up against my front, hugging me tight. “Oof! You’re getting so big, Luce.”

“You’re late, Daddy!”

I tried to laugh but couldn’t even force out a chuckle.

Over Lucy’s shoulder, I spied Cara stepping tentatively into the hall. I looked away as quick as she appeared, burying my face in Lucy’s hair. At least Lucy was still here in my arms. I would fight Lisbeth. I already had my lawyers working on my case to keep custody of Lucy. There wasnothingmore important to me.
