“You okay, man?”

“Put her through.” I covered the receiver with my hand. “Lisbeth.”

Jenson’s eyes widened. “You want me to stay?”

I shook my head and waved him out. He might have said something in return, but my blood was pounding so loud in my ears I couldn’t hear him.

“Wesley?”

I did not tend to think of Lisbeth fondly, ever. But whenever she said my name, I was reduced to putty in her hands. Had been that way ever since we first met. “Lisbeth. You sound well.”

“You’ve been ignoring my calls.”

“Oh. Sorry. Must have missed them.”

“That’s alright. I know you’re very busy.” I could hear her smile through the phone, sly and cunning.

I picked up a pen and started to draw a spiral on my desk blotter to calm my nerves. “I heard you’re engaged. Congratulations.”

“Oh, thank you. That’s very kind of you.”

I closed my eyes tightly. There’s something so painful about being made a stranger by someone who used to be your whole world.

“That’s why I’ve been trying to call. I wanted you to hear it from me rather than someone else.”

“Well, that’s impossible when you’re rubbing elbows with Miami elite, isn’t it?”

She scoffed. “Don’t be bitter, Wesley.”

Anger flared in me. “I’ll be however I like.”

We were both silent for a long moment.

“Is that all you wanted to tell me?”

Lisbeth sighed. “No. That was just the preamble.”

“Then spit it out, I’ve got a meeting in five.” That was a lie, but I always had to make it known to Lisbeth that my time was precious. Otherwise, I found myself going in circles with her.

“Why are you always so cold to me?”

Don’t snap again, Wesley. Don’t be cruel. “You always catch me at the wrong time.” There would never be a right time for Lisbeth to catch me. Though I’d moved on and had no desire for her in my life, the mere thought of her could tear open the stitches of the wound she’d left five years before.

“I see.”

“Lisbeth, get to the point and tell me what you want.”

A long pause. “I want to come visit Lucy.”

I cleared my throat. “What for?”

“Well, I’m getting married, Wesley. She’s a part of my life. And I’d like to introduce her to Yves. That’s my fiancé.”

I know his goddamn name. “That’s completely out of the question.”

“I’m sorry?”

“Lucy won’t be meeting your fiancé. That would be incredibly inappropriate.”
