I looked between my parents. “How is that any different from dating my employer? Which I’m not doing, but since you two are so worried about it —”

Mom rubbed my arm. “Danny’s a friend, Cara.”

“And I’mworking with him. I’m trying to do business with him. That’s a conflict of interest, too, so I’ll thank you both to stay out of my personal life until I explicitly ask you to get involved. This is absolutely ridicu—” My phone buzzing in my pocket cut me off. I pulled it out.

Speak of the devil. Danny was calling me.

“I have to take this.” I pushed past them back into the house and answered the phone. “Hi, Danny.”

Mom whispered loudly to Dad, “Oh it’s Danny! It’s him!”

I glared back at her.

“Hey, Cara. You got a minute? I’ve got good news.”

All the frustration with my parents melted away. Good news — I needed some of that. “Of course. What’s up?”

“You got it.”

I couldn’t breathe. “What?”

“The owners have agreed to your offer. We can sign the contract and go into escrow and run inspections as soon as you sign on the dotted line.”

I couldn’t help letting out a humongous scream of excitement. “Are you serious?!”

“You bet I am. Now, it took some finagling on my end, a little bit of groveling, which I amnota fan of, but I got it done.”

“Oh, thank you, thank you, thank you.”

“Let’s find a time for coffee. Or even better, a drink. And we can get you to sign and —”

Nice try. “I’ll come into your office tomorrow. What are your hours?”

Danny sighed and gave me the information I requested. I’d see him first opportunity I had. We said our goodbyes and I turned around to my parents and Katie who’d joined, trying to listen in on my conversation. “They accepted the offer. The building is mine.”

For the first time all night, everyone seemed happy. My family crowded around me with hugs and congratulations. I slipped into their embrace. My dreams were finally coming true.

Good thing they didn’t know that the man responsible for sponsoring my dream was their adversary, Wesley Taves. I’d keep that information to myself as long as I could.

Chapter14

Wesley

“Hello?” Her voice was a soothing balm coming through the car speakers.

“Cara? I’m headed home.”

“Oh! It’s a little early, isn’t it?”

I felt bad for keeping her late the day before. I had disguised my reasoning with work, but the truth was, I couldn’t build up the courage to go home and face her. I paced my office back and forth, terrified of what I might feel — or do — if I was in the same room with her again. Then I was late. “I owe you for yesterday.”

“Please, Wesley, really, it’s not —”

“I do. I’m stopping at the supermarket on the way home. I’ll make dinner. Don’t lift a finger.”

Cara hesitated. “Are you sure?”

“Unless you wanted to stop whatever fun you two were having.”
