I smiled. “I’m sure you do, Danny. Well, this was great, but I should be off. School pickup can be abitch. You understand, right?”

“Well, wait a second, why don’t we sit and catch up and —”

I got up out of my seat. “Another time. Places to be, people to see, yada, yada, yada. Talk soon. Call me as soon as you know.”

I threw my bag over my shoulder and waltzed out of the coffee shop without looking back. I could feel Danny’s eyes like daggers in my back and I knew I’d done a good job.

“Always leave them wanting more from you and knowing they’ll never get it.”

Wesley had barely walkedin the door when I pounced on him. Before either of us could really react, I threw my arms around his neck, hugging him tightly. Our bodies were so close, even closer than the first day we met when he rescued me — chest to chest, hip to hip, my feet barely touching the floor. I didn’t want to admit how it made me feel.Tingly. Hot. Aroused.“Thank you, Wesley. Thank you so much!”

“Woah! Okay.” He acted as though he was off-balance, but his arms were strong and steady around me.

When I drew back, my arms still resting on his shoulders, Wesley looked at me with confusion. “What was that for?”

Now that I was in his arms, I never wanted to leave. If I had the confidence of a more experienced woman, I could have even kissed him. But that would have been awkward, more awkward than this already was. I let go of him and stepped back. My body already missed the feel of him. “My meeting with Danny. Your advice was so helpful.”

Recognition passed over Wesley’s face. “Right, that was today. Forgive me, I —”

“Have a lot on your mind. I know. I don’t hold it against you.”

Wesley smiled at me. “No, I was thinking about it this morning, actually, and I forgot to wish you good luck. So good luck. Retroactively. Sounds like you didn’t need it, though.”

God, he was thinking about me? I could have melted into a puddle right there in the front hall.

“Tell me all about it.”

“Well, I did everything you said, and it worked. Apparently, there’s another buyer, but I remembered what you said and —”

“Oh, he’s totally lying.”

“Exactly! So I acted like I didn’t care. Stayed firm with the contingency. Upped the offer a little bit and then told him to let me know and —”

“You’re shaking, Cara.”

I looked down at my hands. They were trembling. “I can’t help it; it was just so exhilarating! I didn’t think I could do it, but I did.”

Wesley took my hands, squeezing them tight. My body released all the tension at his touch. He rubbed his thumb back and forth against my skin. I had to stifle a groan. “I knew you could do it.”

“I owe it all to you.”

“No, don’t do that. You did it all on your own. I’m really proud of you.”

I looked up at him. It would have felt more romantic if he hadn’t just said he was proud of me, like I was a kid coming home with straight A’s on their grade report. Still, I wouldn’t let that ruin the moment. “Well, thank you. Your advice was…invaluable.”

A soft smile crossed his lips. “Any time, Cara. Seriously.”

“Daddy!”

The sound of Lucy’s voice had me shying away from Wesley, folding my arms in front of me. I didn’t want her getting the wrong idea. I already could feel her getting more attached to me than she should since I was only meant to be there a short time.

Lucy and Wesley greeted each other with clear affection. Kissing and hugging as if it’d been days, not hours. My body burned with the memory of his touch.

“Well, dinner is in the oven. It’s a shepherd’s pie.”

“Cara, can we have our traditional weekly dinner?”
