This would be the biggest decision I’d make so far in my life. I should have slept on it or called someone to talk it through. But I couldn’t contain my eagerness. I wanted it. I wanted it so badly. And maybe the opportunity to spend time around such an attractive man sweetened the deal even more.

I slid the check across the table. “Sign it.”

Wesley grinned. My stomach flipped, seeing that smile directed at me. “Fantastic.” He pulled a pen out of his pocket and started to scribble his signature onto the check. “Can you start tomorrow?”

“Yes.”

“Good.” Wesley capped the pen and slid the check back to me. A quarter of a million dollars was now mine. “Lucy has the day off from school. Something to do with some seminars for the teachers. It’ll be a good opportunity for you two to get to know each other.”

“Terrific. I’m looking forward to it. She made a great impression on me.”

Wesley’s expression filled with warmth. “That makes me happy to hear. She’s a very special little girl.”

“I can tell.”

Our eyes met for only a moment, but it felt longer. The air seemed to crackle around us as I stared into those warm brown eyes.

Wesley cleared his throat and stood up. “I look forward to working with you, Cara.”

I couldn’t bring myself to stand for fear my legs would give out from under me. “You too.”

“We’ll discuss some sort of stipend for your living expenses once we get the first week under our belt.” He reached into his pocket and pulled out a hundred-dollar bill, setting it in front of me. “For the coffee and a new shirt.” The corner of his mouth ticked up in a smirk.

I rolled my eyes. “Thank you.”

Wesley nodded and walked out of the coffee shop.

If I had been at home alone, I would have jumped up and done a happy dance. I was on top of the world and nothing could stop me. Nothing would.

Without taking the time to think twice about it, I pulled out my phone and immediately called Danny Morden.

“Cara, sweetheart, I was going to call you later —”

“I want to make an offer.”

“An offer?”

“On the building we saw Saturday.” I stared at the check, like it was my lifeline. “I’m ready to make an offer.”

Chapter6

Wesley

I was at the door mere seconds after she rang the bell. I had been anxiously pacing, waiting for her well before 7 am.

Cara greeted me with a smile. “Good morning.”

Her appearance was fresh and casually professional in leggings, a loose sweater, and flats. Even though it was early in the morning, she looked put together and ready for the liveliness of an active six-year-old. From her bright amber eyes to the way her loose waves hung to her shoulders, I was endeared to her from the start.Stay professional, Wesley.I cleared my throat. “Morning. Come on in.”

Cara stepped into the front hall, eyes wide as she scanned her surroundings. “Wow. This is a beautiful home.”

“You haven’t even seen all of it yet.”

She flushed. “Well, I can tell already.”

Before I could say anything else, Lucy scrambled in, sliding on the hardwood floor in her socks. “Lucy! What did I tell you about sliding across the floor?” Last time she had done that, she’d fallen backward and nearly given herself a concussion.

Lucy smiled sheepishly. “Sorry, Daddy.”
