At the front of the room, the sea of people looked even bigger. How was I going to get all their attention?

“Excuse me!” Wesley held up his hand. “Could we cut the music?”

The music playing under the event stopped and everyone quieted down.

“Floor is yours, baby.” Wesley winked at me and gave Henry’s hand a squeeze before stepping off to the side.

I cleared my throat. Now or never, Cara. “Good morning, everyone! Thank you for being here.”

I glanced around at all of the faces.Focus on the people you did this for. I found Lucy and Katie in the crowd. My parents. Then Wesley. I tightened my hands around Henry. With all of them, I could do anything. “It has been my dream for years to open a daycare that’s able to provide high-quality care to all children, regardless of income. Little Wings is a place for all children. To learn, to grow, to love.” I touched the butterfly on my wrist. That’s what Little Wings was named for. It gave me a burst of confidence. “I’m happy to announce that an ‘anonymous donor’ has initiated our ongoing scholarship fund with an incredibly generous donation of five hundred thousand dollars.”

The crowd gasped and applauded.

Wesley had insisted I not name him, which I thought was silly, but I left him anonymous as he wished.

“Registration is open for the upcoming session of —”

Wesley suddenly cut me off, stepping up beside me. “Sorry to cut in, but I do have an addendum.”

I tried my best not to glare. He’d just hyped me up to make this big speech and now he was interrupting? Some habits die hard, I guess. Wesley had become much better at letting me take the reins when it came to Little Wings, so I was shocked he was stepping in like this.

“I can’t imagine someone better to run a daycare than Cara Smith. Not just because she’s mother to my children and a great roommate…”

The crowd chuckled.

“Wesley, what are you doing?” I whispered.

Wesley smiled at me, an unreadable emotion in his eyes.

I felt a tug on my dress. I turned around to find Lucy standing next to me. “Lucy?”

“Cara, will you marry my daddy?”

I blinked. The words weren’t connecting in my head. “W-what?”

Lucy laughed. “Would you marry my —”

“I heard you, I’m just…”

The crowd gasped again, however, this time I wasn’t sure why. I whipped around to Wesley, but he was no longer standing beside me.

He was down on one knee, holding a small red box. “Cara…”

I gasped, covering my mouth with my hand. Henry stirred restlessly against my chest so I rocked him side to side, praying to God he wouldn’t start squalling.

“I love you. You’re brilliant. You’re courageous. You’re an amazing mother. You said you didn’t want to rush things. But I can’t wait another moment without you as my wife. Will you marry me?”

Lucy wrapped her arms around my waist and looked up at me. I smiled down at her, tearing up as I ran my hand through her blonde hair, just like her father’s and brother’s. I glanced over at my parents and Katie, all of them looking proud and knowing, as if they were aware this was going to happen.

Everyone was saying yes.

Now it was my turn.

I looked into Wesley’s deep brown eyes. “Yes. Of course, I’ll marry you!”

The entire room exploded with excited cheers, scaring Henry so bad he started to cry, but I comforted him quickly. Nothing could get in the way of my joy and gratitude toward the universe for giving me this gift.

Wesley opened the box, revealing a ring covered in sparkling diamonds.
