“I’ll text you the details for Monday.”

“Okay.”

It took everything in me not to pull her right into my arms and kiss her with everything in me. “Thank you. You have no idea how much this means to me.”

Cara shook her head. “No. I think I do.”

To my surprise, she took my hand, pulled herself close to me, and kissed my cheek. “I’ll see you Monday.”

As she drew away, I tightened my hand around hers. “Wait a second.” I pulled her back into my embrace and kissed her.

I could feel a smile creep onto her lips before she pushed me away. “Monday.”

“Monday.”

Cara backed away from me slowly, and with a final nod, hurried down the steps and back into her car.

I watched her drive off, leaning on the stone banister to catch my breath.

Cara Smith was something else. And goddamn, I was ready to let the world know she was mine.

“Wesley, we should get started.”

I shook my head. “She’ll be here.”

I was waiting in front of the elevator that dropped us off at Nelson’s office. Lisbeth and Yves were already set up in the conference room. I had tried to keep Yves out of it. It was very unusual for anyone but parents to be involved in custody mediations. But Lisbeth had refused to do it without him.

So I had refused to do it without Cara.

“Yournanny?” Lisbeth’s tone was full of disdain.

“No. My girlfriend.”

Fire burned in her eyes. “You said she was your nanny.”

“She was. Now, she’s my girlfriend.”

Lisbeth snarled like a caged wolf. “How?”

I smiled wryly. “It’s really quite simple. I’d be happy to explain it to you if you’re too naive to understand.”

She glared over at her lawyer. “Are you hearing this?”

The mediator, Tina, gave her a look just as cutting. “Let’s wait until mediation officially begins, shall we?”

At least someone could put Lisbeth in her place.

Cara would show up. She’d told me so herself.

Even when it was a quarter past nine and then a half hour, I believed she would show up.

“We can’t keep them waiting. It’s not good precedent to —”

Nelson was interrupted by the elevator dinging. My heart leaped into my throat.

The doors slid open and there she was.Cara. I couldn’t hold back my smile when I saw her.
