“Hi, Sean. Sorry to bother you.” Snow’s voice sounded stressed on the other end of the line.

“You’re never a bother. What’s up?”

“Well, not surprisingly I am recently unemployed, and I was thinking about spending some time at the resort. You had previously mentioned a steep discount—”

“Not a discount, free. After what happened the last time you were here, you deserve a free stay and I know the guys would love to see you again, me included.”

“That’s awfully generous but I can’t let you guys do that. I will pay—”

“No, absolutely not. Think of it as us making up for the incident with Hunter. That was our fault, and you deserve a free stay not to mention a relaxing one this time.”

She started to argue then stopped, her voice sounding tired.

“So you’re unemployed? What happened?”

“It’s a long story, but Hilda axed me, likely because she can’t stop fawning over Hunter and Hunter hates me now,” she said.

“I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be. I’m not. I’m actually relieved. I mean, I hate being without a job, and I don’t have that much savings, but I’m sure I’ll figure something out. At least I’m out of there. It’s just, well, I have a lot going on right now and I really need to talk to you guys.”

“Is everything okay? Besides the job loss, that is?”

She was quiet for a second.

“Snow?”

“Yeah, everything is fine. It’s just, never mind.”

I didn’t want to push her to talk, but I could tell there was something she wasn’t sharing with me.

“Well, whatever it is, I hope that it can be fixed with a comfy night’s sleep in some of the best beds the world has to offer.” I was trying to lighten the mood, and it worked. I heard a soft chuckle on the other end.

“Thanks, Sean. You’re right, I could definitely use a good night’s sleep in one of those beds.”

I was hoping that besides the bed, she wanted to see us, too, because I knew we were all aching to see her again.

“I heard about your article getting picked up, congrats on that,” I said.

“Thanks. Who knows, maybe I can write a follow-up article while I’m there.”

“I think that’s a great idea. I know I speak for all of us when I say that we’re excited to see you, so just let me know when you’ll be arriving and we will have a cottage ready for you.”

“What do you say about tonight?”

“You can be here tonight?”

“I’m already in town. After losing my job this afternoon, I just drove and drove and found myself here.”

“We’ll have a room set up for you right away.”

“Thanks, Sean. Thanks for everything.”

She hung up the phone, and I got straight to work getting a cottage ready for her. I called my staff and made sure that they not only upgraded her to one of our larger cottages but made sure she had every perk and benefit our resort offered added on at no additional charge.

It was the least I could do after everything she’d been through and because, well, I was looking forward to seeing her again and I wanted to spoil her.
