“Oh yeah? Well I might hold you to that,” Snow said with a playful wink.

Hunter said nothing, only staring at me with an insidious gaze.

“Are you two together?”

“No,” they all said at the same time. All with a different level of urgency.

“Okay then…” I trailed off, not having any idea what was going on. “If you need help finding your rooms—”

“We’re fine,” Hunter said, his eyes boring into mine.

“Snow, are you fine?” My tone took a more serious note.

“I am, thank you, I think I can find the room myself,” she said before slipping away from the group. Hunter left too, not saying a word before he followed Snow.

“I don’t get a good feeling about that guy,” I said to Doc.

“Me either. They work together, but it’s a strange coincidence that they’re here at the same time.”

“Coincidence, my ass.”

“That’s what I said. Is there a way to make sure they’re on opposite ends of the resort?”

“Yep,” I said, pulling out the tablet I used for work. I pulled up the cottage assignments. “Ahh, they’re in the same zone, but I think I can change it… he hasn’t gotten to his room yet. He will get a notification that his cottage assignment has changed.”

“Good,” Doc said. “It’s the least we can do. I’ll tell Gage to alert the security team to any potential issues.”

“Sounds good,” I replied, putting the tablet away. “Hopefully we’re just being overly cautious, but you never know.”

Snow

“Hey, Snow,” Hunter called out to me. I had tried to walk fast, but my petite little legs could only go so fast compared to his long ones. I paused and tried to plaster a friendly smile on my face. I had hoped to get away from the office and everyone in it; I didn’t want him following me around like a lost little puppy as I tried to enjoy myself and discover the beauty of the resort and everything it had to offer.

Still I stopped and tried to be polite. “Oh, hey, Hunter. I’m pretty tired, I really want to just get to my cottage and relax if you don’t mind.”

“Yeah, that’s fine. I checked the map and we’re not too far from each other.”

My jaw clenched.Great, just great. I thought to myself.. But then I paused. “How do you know what cottage number I’ve been assigned?”

“I saw the number written on your welcome pamphlet, when the guy at check-in handed it to you.” He smiled, showcasing a perfect made-for-tv grin. His teeth were almosttoowhite and straight.

There was a buzzing sound and his bracelet lit up. There were words on the screen but I couldn’t make them out. Hunter frowned as he read them.

“They changed my room assignment,” he said slowly. His jaw clenched.

“Oh really? Why?”

“It doesn’t say, but I’m on the other side of the resort now.”

I secretly thanked whoever made that happen. I couldn’t be sure, but I thought Doc or Bash might be behind it. I couldn’t help but smile, though I tried to appear neutral.

The truth was, I really didn’t want to be there with someone from work, especiallyHunter.

How could I let go and explore the hedonism of The Gilded Peak with my human resource manager following me around?

Not to mention how strange it was that he was there at the same time. What were the odds? A resort several hours away, tucked into the mountains, that few people had heard about except those in-the-know.
