And he felt it now, at this moment, wanting her more than anything else he’d wanted in…well, ever, really. Every text message this week had felt like a strange foreplay, where they built up each other’s estimation of each other. He was a cerebral sort, and nothing was sexier than a woman who could banter ideas back and forth with him.

But as much as he wanted to take her, right here and right now, bending her over the table and sliding deep inside her until he eradicated all thoughts of another man from her mind, Kane knew he had to proceed cautiously.

Because the other thing was–she had become his friend. Perhaps, even annoyingly so. Which meant he had to treasure the friendship because no matter what happened between them, Kane realized he didn’t want to lose Iris from his life.

“What…how…much more?” Iris gasped. He wondered if she even realized she was rubbing against him, thrusting her hips gently as he held her locked against his body.

“I want it all, Iris.” Her eyes widened with shock, and he gave her a wicked smile that had pink flooding her cheeks. “But I’ll take whatever you offer.”

“Oh…my. Um…” Iris nibbled that delicious lower lip of hers again and stroked her hands up and down his chest, muttering to herself as she did so. He wondered if she consulted her spirit guides or was just caught up in her indecision. Helpless not to kiss her again while she mulled over what to do, he leaned over and bit her lower lip, sucking gently to take away the sting. “Ohhhhh.”

Here was need and something more. Kane felt it as she wrapped her arms around his waist, pulling him tight so she all but rode him as their tongues twined together. Here was a match, two souls finding their twin, and he knew he’d need to show her what a relationship with a good man could look like.

“Okay, a little bit more…” Iris breathed against his mouth, and Kane smiled. So he would take her, inch by impossible inch, toward the finish line that he could already envision. Maybe it was because he wrote romance novels, maybe it was because she had awoken something in him again, or maybe it was just because it was Iris. But the switch had flipped for him, and now he knew he had to make her see what could be.

So if it was to be a dance, then, well, he’d happily lead.

“Just a little bit then,” Kane agreed, breathing softly at her lips, keeping his kiss gentle as he positioned his hands under her bum. Pulling her as tightly against him as he could, he began to meet her thrusting, rubbing himself against her, enjoying how she bowed backward with a soft moan, exposing the length of her throat. There, he kissed his way down her soft skin, loving how she shivered at his touch and reached for the first button on her oversized shirt. Gently, he unbuttoned her shirt until he revealed a simple tank bra in petal pink. Already Kane could see how her nipples stood at attention through the thin material, and he brushed his thumbs gently over them.

“Yes,” Iris breathed, and Kane smiled, appreciating how responsive she was to the lightest of touches. He suspected she would be an active and willing participant in bed when he finally got her there. But not now, not today. This moment was just for her as he took her through the first steps of the dance they now found themselves in. Her breasts were lovely, round, and firm, and he cupped both in his hands, sliding the tank bra down to reveal creamy white skin and perfectly pink nipples.

He wanted to take each nipple in his mouth and see how she responded to his touch, but already she’d increased her rhythm against him. He wondered if she could come this way, riding him through his pants while his hands massaged her breasts. If he kissed her where he wanted to, he’d have to break contact with where she was pressed so tightly against him, and he refused to do that. Instead, he caressed her breasts, noting when she shivered, and increased his pace, thrusting harder against her.

“That’s it, baby,” Kane said, his breath hot at her ear. “I want you to come for me right now while you ride me. I want you to think about how amazing it would feel if I slid inside you right now, filling you, your body clenching around me as I thrust into you, over and over, so hot, so wet…yes, just like that.”

When Iris arched against him, her legs trembling, he brought his lips to her mouth, capturing her cries as she came undone around him. He could have followed suit, he was that close but, luckily, he’d taken care of himself in the shower that morning and still held on to the tiniest thread of control. Instead, he stroked her back, holding her close to him, as she buried her head against his chest.

“That was…I don’t even know what that was,” Iris admitted.

Kane beamed at the top of her head, appreciating and understanding her shyness at the moment. It had been incredibly erotic to be able to touch her yet not touch her the way he wanted to, in this empty shop while the world passed by outside. Remembering the front window a touch too late, Kane glanced guiltily over his shoulder and was relieved to find the curtain was tugged closed across the window. That could have been bad for business, and he could kick himself for not checking that sooner.

“Incredible?” Kane supplied, pulling back and using a finger to tilt her chin up to look at him. “Super hot? Achingly erotic? Sexy enough to make me have naughty dreams for weeks?”

“You think I’m sexy?” Iris blinked up at him, and he laughed, surprised that was the point she would fixate on.

“I just dry-humped you into oblivion because that was the closest I could get to you. And I’d do it a hundred times over if it meant I got to have my hands on you. Sexy does not begin to describe what I think about you, Iris.”

“Oh, my.” Iris fanned her face, and Kane laughed, easing back a bit. He could see the moment she remembered that she thought she wasn’t ready for a relationship. “Listen, Kane.”

“Just friends,” Kane said, tapping her nose. “Yup, I got it.”

“Right, just friends. This was just…” Iris searched for the word. She looked cute, her hair rumpled, her delicious breasts still fully on display for Kane to enjoy. “An anomaly.”

“An anomaly is something that deviates from the norm,” Kane said, reaching over to twine a lock of her hair around his finger. “Wouldn’t you say that we, as the people we are, already do that?”

“Well, sure, but I mean, like…for us. As friends. Friends aren’t meant to do…that. Even oddball friends like us,” Iris argued.

“And I’d disagree. I think the best relationships are ones where there’s also a friendship, don’t you?”

“I…” Iris scrunched her nose, caught.

“Is there any other heavy lifting you need me to do at the moment?” Kane asked, brushing a kiss across her lips before she could jump back.

“No, I’m good,” Iris said faintly.

“Great, then I’m off to the market. I’ll see you for a pint later, then,” Kane called, already at the door before she could cancel their plans for later. Which he knew she was going to try to do because once she got in that pretty head of hers and overanalyzed what had just happened, she would pull back from him. Instead, he gave her no chance to cancel and zipped out the door.

He almost stumbled over an old woman with bright eyes and a beaming smile.
