“I have it on good authority that Clare has absolutely nothing to do with this. This is on a grander and far more dangerous scale.”

“How much more dangerous can it get? They damn near killed you. They did kill you. You know how many times you tried to die? You even succeeded a few times,” Garrett stormed.

Sterling quirked a brow. “Well, you did always tell me I could do anything I set my mind to.”

“Shut up,” Garrett snapped. He tugged at his bowtie before Cerys swatted at his hand.

“That’s a morbid way of looking at it,” I told Sterling.

Garrett composed himself. “Speaking of that sort of garbage, are you coming up to Clare for Solstice?”

“Is that an invitation?”

“Yes, and you might as well bring everyone,” Garrett said. “We can go hunting. Do the other two hunt?”

“Not especially.”

Garrett rolled his eyes in my direction like he expected me to redeem the rest of my pack. “Do you like to hunt?”

I eyed him, uncertain how to answer. “More or less.”

“That’s not what I asked. If you don’t want to hunt, just say so. Don’t pull that diplomatic bullshit with me. Sterling already ripped everything open and you’ve seen my bowels.”

“It’s not your bowels she cares about, old man,” Sterling said. “Can’t you spot a sore subject when you poke it? But maybe if you’re nice to her, she’ll teach you something.”

Garrett grinned, and I tapped Sterling’s arm. “You’ll get a chance to show me if you can get meat somewhere other than the freezer case.”

Sterling huffed and bristled with insult.

Garrett snerked and turned to Cerys. “The woman is almost as vicious as you.”

“The night is young, but I am considerably more practiced,” Cerys said.

Garrett grinned.

“Can I bring you a rabbit,” Sterling said dryly. “Not will you, or I want, but can. What do you think I am?”

“Standing there in a tuxedo like you were born in it,” I said sweetly.

Garrett laughed out loud. Cerys actually cracked a smile.

Sterling practically huffed and chuffed at my outrageous accusations.

Garrett clapped Sterling on the arm with a laugh, then took Cerys’ hand and they moved into the crowd to smooze.

“I’ll show you how city-bred I am,” he growled in my ear, and I laughed as my skin prickled with anticipation. “Now come on, before we get drunk and so bored we get into real trouble.”

“I saw a coat closet,” I suggested.

“Is winter coming and you’re going into heat?”

“You better hope I don’t.” I inhaled his scent and slid my fingers down one of his tuxedo lapels. “Can’t I enjoy the carnal privilege of marriage?”

“You can. And you will. Later. If you behave.”

I purred as I sipped my champagne. “What happens if I don’t behave?”

He took my champagne from me and downed it himself.
