Alessio grinned. ‘How you amuse me with your biting choice of words...’

Sophie blushed. His eyes roved over her face and she reddened even more.

She could see a dark, burning intent there that mirrored hers. Whatever her head told her, she still wanted this man more than was good for her.

She needed him to return to London as soon as possible for a number of reasons.

She needed him to be physically away from her so that she could start learning how to think straight again.

Plus she needed him to disappear so that she could start sowing the seeds of their eventual break-up.

She needed him to go.

She longed for him to stay.

‘But of course you’re right.’

His eyes stayed on her face, in a lazy, thorough inspection that made her quiver and tremble and think about sex.

‘So...’

Sophie blinked and was brought back down to earth as he continued, his voice mild and cool and sensible.

‘So I’ll check the house when we get there. I’ve been getting twice-daily progress reports, and every member of that team knows better than to slack off, but I’ll still need to make sure things are where they should be.’

Alessio paused before taking the plunge. Because it was always better to be safe than sorry, and already he could feel himself lulled into thoughts of hanging around for longer...taking her to bed...enjoying long nights with her sleeping next to him...

It made no sense. In a short space of time he had somehow become accustomed to semi waking in the early hours of the morning and reaching out to feel her warm, naked body next to him. It had been as pleasing just to feel her warmth as any amount of hectic lovemaking.

‘On the financial side, things have moved at speed,’ he said. ‘I’ve made a point of discussing everything with my father so that he’s kept in the loop...’

‘He hasn’t mentioned anything of that sort to me. In fact, he’s barely mentioned the whole business of the company losing money...’

Alessio grinned.

Their eyes met in shared amusement and Sophie shivered.

‘He’s adapted fast,’ she murmured drily, and Alessio’s lips twitched further.

‘You think so? I’d say the old man has gone from ranting and railing to downright having his say to acquiescence in record time.’

They both burst out laughing and Leonard spun round to look at them. He rapped on the partition, which Alessio obediently slid open.

‘What are the pair of you cackling about?’

‘We’re discussing when Alessio is going to head back down to London.’

Sophie sobered up fast, and shuffled a few inches away from Alessio and his dangerously seductive orbit.

‘Why the rush?’ Leonard’s bushy brows pulled together into a frown.

‘An empire to run?’ Alessio interjected drily.

‘Or is the empire runningyou, my boy? No good if it is! Anyway, you can’t leave until the day after tomorrow, earliest.’

‘Why’s that?’

Leonard tapped the side of his nose and said smugly, ‘I want to have a little celebration dinner to mark the turning of the tide.’
