“And you just said nothing about it?” Simon asked.

“You didn’t know my father. Ask your mother about him. Once he made up his mind about someone, that was it, son or not.” He stood from his chair. “I just came here to say my piece and to apologize to all of you. I know it’s probably hard for you to understand, but I hope someday you will. Barb?”

“Yes. Let’s get you home. You have a big day tomorrow.” She hooked her arm around his and laid her head on his shoulder. “I’ll see you in the morning, Jackson.”

I stared at Grayson and Gabriel as they sat there and could see the pain and sadness in their eyes, just like I saw in Christian’s when he found out the truth.

“We better get going too,” Grayson said.

“Yeah. We have to be at the hospital by six a.m.,” Gabriel spoke.

“I wish we could have met you guys under better circumstances.” Grayson stood up.

“Nah. Don’t worry about it. The circumstances are fine. That generation of the Kind family ended with our fathers. This generation is what you should be proud of.” Simon smirked. “We’re a bunch of fine fucking men, and always know we have your backs.” He stood up and hugged both of them.

“As much as I’d like to stay and talk about tonight's events, I have to get to bed. I need to be on my game more than ever tomorrow.” I sighed.

“Good luck, Jackson. You got this.” My cousins took turns fist-bumping me.

“Nathan and I will both be watching tomorrow, Conner said. “We had June reschedule our appointments. I wouldn’t miss what you’re doing for the world, brother.”

CHAPTER28

Jackson

“You got this, babe.” Georgia hugged me tightly. “I love you.”

“Thanks, Georgia. I love you too.” I brought my lips to hers.

I walked into the pre-op room and checked Ian’s vitals.

“Are you ready for this?” I asked him.

“Are you?” His brow arched.

“I am.” The corners of my mouth curved upward. “They’ll bring you to the O.R. in a few minutes.

I walked out of the room, and Aunt Barb followed me.

“Jackson?” She stared at me with tears in her eyes.

“I know, Aunt Barb.” I grabbed her hand and squeezed it. “I’ll have the nurses keep you updated.”

I walked into the scrub room and saw Jamieson scrubbing in.

“Good morning.” He smiled.

“Morning.” I sighed as I turned on the water and grabbed the soap.

“I’ve been where you are right now, my friend. It’s hard to believe in yourself when a task seems so impossible. You didn’t get where you are today by being mediocre and doubting yourself. Next to me, you’re one of the best.”

I glanced over at him as a smirk crossed his lips. “Thanks.” I breathed out a laugh.

“It looks like they’re ready for us.” We both stared through the glass into the operating room. “You and I are going to make history today, my friend. Let’s go show them what we’re made of.” He winked.

As soon as we were gowned and gloved, I inhaled a sharp breath and looked up at the operating suite filled with residents, students, interns, Nathan, Conner, Christian, Ella, Grayson, and Gabriel.

“We’re ready if you are,” Markus, the anesthesiologist, spoke.
