As we talked, the sliding door opened, and Ella walked in.

“Hi, Uncle Jackson. Oh. I’m sorry—you’re Dr. Jamieson Finn!” She ran over to him.

“Yes, I am.” Jamieson smiled. “And who might you be?”

“I’m Ella. I’m Uncle Jackson’s niece. I just read one of your articles in the medical journal about your schizophrenia research. It’s brilliant.”

“Thank you, Ella.” Jamieson looked at me for a moment. “What is your IQ?” he asked her.

“160.” She smiled.

“I see. I’m going to set up a play date for you and my daughter, Ava. I think the two of you would get along great.”

“I’d like that.” She grinned.

“Did you need something, sweetheart?” I asked.

“No. I just wanted to say hi. You didn’t tell me you knew Dr. Finn.” Her little eye narrowed.

“I didn’t know you knew who he was,” I spoke with an arch in my brow.

“My Uncle Jackson let me sit in on a craniotomy. It was so cool. I was standing next to him right while he removed the tumor.”

“That is amazing. So, I take it you want to become a neurosurgeon?” he asked her.

“I don’t know yet.” She shrugged. “I love the heart too. My Uncle Christian said I could watch one of his surgeries. I might get a Ph.D. in both neuro and cardio. I haven’t decided yet.”

Jamieson’s brows raised as he looked at me.

“If we’re finished, we should go take a look at those scans,” I spoke.

“Is Dr. Finn going to help you with that nasty tumor, Uncle Jackson?”

“That’s why I asked him to come over. I need his opinion.”

“Can I watch?”

“Sure, you can.” Jamieson smiled as he patted her head. “It’s very important to educate genius minds.” He winked at me.

We stepped into my office, and I pulled the scans up on the monitor on the wall.

“Oh boy,” Jamieson said as he stared at the images. “Damn it.” He sighed.

“This is the scan he had done three months ago.” I brought up the image and placed them side by side.

“It grew considerably,” Jamieson spoke. “Last year, I removed a similar tumor from a young woman. Her tumor was benign. I didn’t think there was a way I could do it until my daughter came up with a way.”

“Seriously?” I asked.

“Yeah. The problem is this vessel right here. The tumor I removed wasn’t near that major vessel. The procedure I used would work if the damn tumor didn’t wrap itself around here.” He pointed. “One wrong move, and he’s brain dead.”

“It’ll take two surgeons to remove that,” Ella said.

“What did you say, Ella?” I asked.

“Brilliant,” Jamieson said. “She might be right.” He walked over to my desk and picked up the brain model sitting on it. “We can go from here and here at the same time. All one of us has to do is carefully snip away this area, so it’s further away from that vessel. Once it’s far enough, the other will pull it right out. You can’t be in two areas at once, but together we can be.” The corners of his mouth curved upward.

“Damn, Jamieson. It just might work. Ella, you’re a genius.” I picked her up and kissed her hard.
