“Brain tumor?” He sat down next to me.

“I’m suspecting.” I sighed. “We brought him here. There’s no way he can get behind the wheel of a car.”

The door opened, and Georgia stepped in. “How’s it going?” She stood behind me and placed her hand on my shoulder.

“I’m just waiting for the scans to come through,” I said.

Suddenly, her pager went off, and she sighed.

“Thank God I’m already here. One of my patients is down in the ER. I’ll talk to you later.” She kissed the top of my head.

Giuseppe’s brain images slowly loaded on the screen, and I sat there staring at them.

“Looks like you were right.” Christian patted my back. “I have to run. I’ll talk to you later.”

“See ya, bro.”

I picked up the phone and called down to the ER.

“This is Dr. Jackson Kind. I need to admit a patient of mine with a brain tumor in the parietal lobe for surgical removal tomorrow morning.”

“Patient’s name, Dr. Kind?” the nurse asked.

“Giuseppe Lombardi.”

“I’ll start the transfer paperwork,” she said.

“Thank you.”

I walked into the MRI room as the technician was helping Giuseppe up from the table.

“Well, Dr. Kind?” he asked.

“The MRI showed a tumor in your parietal lobe, just as I suspected.”

“I have brain cancer?” His brows furrowed.

“Not necessarily. I’m admitting you, and I’d like to go in and remove the tumor tomorrow morning.”

“But my work. I have a wedding this weekend.”

“I’m sorry, Giuseppe. You were having all kinds of issues tonight. Do you really want to take that chance with someone’s wedding this weekend? Besides, you’re restricted from driving.”

He placed his hands over his face and started sobbing.

Shit.

“I’m sorry, Giuseppe. I promise you that everything is going to be okay.” I gripped his shoulder. “The sooner we get the tumor out, the better.”

“I need to speak with my brother,” he said.

“Okay. I’ll see if he’s here and send him up to your room.”

I went to the ER and saw Georgia walking out of one of the rooms.

“There you are,” I spoke. “How’s your patient?”

“False labor. First-time mom in panic mode.” She smiled. “How’s Giuseppe?”
