All I can do is nod, the sobs escaping me making words impossible. Cosimo takes this affirmative happily, jumping to his feet and spinning me in a huge circle before kissing me like I am air and he’s a drowning man. Once I find the ability to speak again, I murmur, “Yes, yes, yes,” against his lips between kisses.

He slips the ring onto my finger, kissing each digit individually once he’s done. I hold my hand up to the light, letting it reflect off the facets of the diamond until it’s almost hypnotizing.

“I will be a good husband,” he tells me, wrapping me in an embrace from behind. “And I will be a good father, but only because you’ve made me a good man am I able to do those things. You saved me, Clara.”

The word ‘father’ makes me jolt in his arms, remembering my secret. The proposal made me forget for a moment, but now I can’t think of a better way to cap off the night.

I have Cosimo sit in the captain's chair and spin it around towards me. After grabbing the test and hiding it in my hand, I slink to him slowly, straddling his lap as if my surprise is something much more scandalous. I can tell he’s buying my ruse, but I can’t keep up the act long. I have him hold out his hand, and I press the test into his palm.

Cosimo’s reaction is instant. He whips the test up to check it, all the blood draining from his face before rushing back and making him look flush. First he smiles, unsure and shocked, which is the first time I’ve ever seen him this way, but then he wraps me in his arms and kisses every inch of my face, neck, and any other bit of exposed skin he can access.

“A baby,” he gasps. “Clara, my angel, my love, you’re… you’re… everything.”

“I can’t wait to start a family with you,” I tell him, burying my face in his neck. “I love you so much Cosimo.”

“I love you too, sweetheart.”

We don’t leave each other’s arms for the rest of our time in the cove. This place is magic when we’re together, and neither of us is ready to let this night go. But now, we’ll have forever to come back here and watch the sunset and stars. The rest of our lives.
