What was wrong with him?

She tilted her chin up and studied his face, her lips parted slightly, as if she could hear his thoughts.

“In addition, for security and training purposes, everything that happens at the Midsummer Center for Fertility will be recorded,” the woman went on. “However, if you say the words confirm privacy mode, Oberon will not record or display the proceedings to our staff.”

But the words were merely washing over him now. He couldn’t absorb anything else with her eyes on him.

He dragged his eyes back to the film, clenching the arm of the sofa until he was afraid it would buckle, barely holding himself back from touching her.

“It is the responsibility of the surrogate to submit to the necessary procedures to accomplish a pregnancy,” the woman said brightly. “As a side note, according to our exit polls, 95% of participants find the procedure to be highly to extremely enjoyable.”

Gods, but he would make her scream with rapture.

He could feel the tension in her from the places where their bodies touched. She was as tight as the strings on a vibroharp, and he would make her sing.

“Upon successful conception, the surrogate will protect herself and the developing fetus by any means necessary to ensure a healthy birth,” the woman was saying. “We will do all we can to ensure that the surrogate’s experience is a pleasant one. However, the surrogate understands that her experience here is unique to the program. At the end of the gestational period, she will return to her home planet, and there will be no further contact with the father or the offspring.”

Gage’s reaction was furious and visceral.

He hadn’t come here looking for a girlfriend, but the idea that this Terran would be allowed to accept him and then trot off again to her home planet, never to see him again, was unacceptable.

Mine.

His heart stuttered in his chest. That word. It had come out of nowhere. He had not summoned it, or even considered the possibility.

Could this Terran woman be his true mate?

“It is the responsibility of the prospective parent to treat the surrogate with respect,” the woman on the holo-film went on in the background of his thoughts. “Abuse of any kind will not be tolerated. Renewed consent is required for each act of physical intimacy.”

But there could be no fear of abuse if he was her true mate. There would only be endless pleasure and longing between them.

He closed his eyes against the flames of desire the thought ignited in him, praying for the strength to make it through this presentation, until he could get her alone and find out the truth of his feelings, and hers.

Naomi

Naomi took slow, calming breaths and resisted the impulse to squirm in her seat beside the big alien.

Barely.

His hard thigh felt so good against hers, and heat seemed to pour out of him, warming her and sending little ripples of awareness down her spine.

Best of all was his clean, masculine scent. She longed to press her nose to his chest and drink it in.

“Do either of you have any questions?” Dr. Oppyx asked brightly, as the lights came back on.

None that I can ask out loud...

Naomi bit her lip and hoped the heat in her cheeks wasn’t turning her face bright red. She had pretty much stopped listening once it became clear that yes, Maltaffians did need a physical mating experience to bring their seed to life.

“None?” Dr. Oppyx asked.

“It all seemed similar to the information in the contract,” Naomi guessed.

“Yes,” Dr. Oppyx said, smiling. “Well, if you two are all set, then it’s time for your first bonding activity together.”

Gage nodded to her.
