Naomi bit her lip, feeling foolish.

“If that’s all, then I think you should trust the instinct that made you like him,” Chloe went on. “Talk to him, even if you don’t share specifics. You have very good gut instincts, Naomi. I think you might be pleasantly surprised.”

“And if not, then at least I know where I stand,” Naomi said thoughtfully.

“You’ll find the right time to talk to him,” Chloe said. “And hey, a guy with money might be able to keep you safe from the Bulgaros.”

“He does have an amazing guard dog,” Naomi allowed.

“There you go,” Chloe said brightly.

“Thank you,” Naomi said, meeting her friend’s eyes on the screen. “I’m really glad you’re here.”

“Me too,” Chloe said. “Maybe when I meet my match, I’ll be calling you back.”

“Maybe so,” Naomi told her.

An alert popped up on the screen.

Fifteen minutes to leave for dinner and dancing.

“Oh shoot,” Naomi said. “I have to run.”

“You’ll talk to him, right?” Chloe said sternly, fixing Naomi with a very serious expression,

“Yes, teacher,” Naomi joked, winking at her friend.

Chloe rolled her eyes and then blew her a kiss.

Naomi blew one back and the screen went dark, leaving her alone once more.

“Exit privacy mode,” she said.

“Thank you,” Oberon voice said immediately. “Did you enjoy your call?”

“I did,” Naomi said. “It gave me a lot to think about.”

Gage

Gage paced nervously outside the spa, wondering how Naomi was feeling after some time to relax.

If a call had made it through the Center’s bracelet filtration protocol, it must have been an important one. And whatever it was about, it had clearly upset her.

Athena was pacing at his side, but part of her attention was taken up by the pair of midnight stallions pulling the floating carriage that was waiting to take them to dinner.

While they had been exposed to all kinds of animals in their training and fieldwork, actual horses were not common on Maltaffia or any of its allies.

And Gage wasn’t even sure if these were real horses.

“It’s okay, Athena,” he told his partner reassuringly. “If they’re here, it’s because Oberon knows they’re safe.”

And now I sound as soft as any rich idiot on vacation.

It was probably for the best that Athena wasn’t letting her guard down. One of them had to keep their wits about them, and it certainly wasn’t Gage.

He was too busy fretting about what Naomi would say when she found out how many credits were in his savings.
