“I want to be with you, too,” I responded quickly, breathlessly. I couldn't imagine a life without Shawn.

A low growl grew in his chest, and he pulled me against him again, kissing me deeply. My eyes fell shut, and all I could do was bask in the warmth of his love.

Epilogue

Shawn

I stood next to my private plane, eyes peeled for Violet. Today was her last day of work for the semester, and I had plans for us. She'd called me fifteen minutes ago, voice curious.

“Did you send a chauffeur to get me?”

“Yes,” I responded.

“What's going on, Shawn?” She laughed.

She usually traveled home by herself, often forgoing a car so she could walk from work. It bothered me at first, but I learned to trust she would be safe. Sending someone to pick her up was characteristic of me, but I'd never done so before. It's no wonder she was curious.

“You'll see,” I replied.

“Okay,” she drawled. “See you soon.”

I looked at my watch. Five minutes till she rounded the corner. Excitement bubbled in my chest. I couldn't wait to see her eyes light up, her smile round her cheeks. Nothing fulfilled me as much as finding new ways to make her smile. Her joy was my drug, and I always wanted to keep her happy.

My lawyer pressed charges on Violet’s behalf months ago, and the final verdict was read a week ago. Eric would be behind bars for the foreseeable future. When we got the news, Violet hugged me tightly, and I felt her relief. He was gone for good. She was truly free, and prison bars plus a heavy sentence ensured it.

A black car curved into the hanger, and a smile lifted my lips. The driver came to a stop, and Violet got out. She was still in the clothes she'd donned this morning. A black pencil skirt and a silk blouse complete with stilettos. The wind ruffled her thick dark hair around her face, and she swept it away. Our eyes met, and she blessed me with a smile.

My heart squeezed. I took a step forward, and she closed the distance between us.

“What’s going on?” She looked from me to the plane.

“Hello to you, too, love.” I kissed her lips.

She giggled and playfully swatted my arm. “Seriously, what's happening? You got a plane?”

“I've always had a plane,” I responded.

She eyed me.

“Fine. Remember the vacation I promised to take you on?”

Her eyes lit up, but she raised a brow. "The one where you left out all the important details?”

I chuckled and wrapped an arm around her waist. “Yeah. Well, we're going today.”

Her mouth fell open, and she pressed a palm against it. "Shawn, that's... Oh my goodness!" She wrapped her small arms around me and pressed her body to mine. “Where are we going?” She pulled back, staring at me expectantly.

“Italy,” I said, relishing the brightness of her face. I'd been to Italy many times over the years but never for leisure. “For two weeks.”

“Oh, wow.” She took a step back, laughter bubbling out of her. "I planned to go home, put on some music, and clean my room. And now I'm going on a vacation?"

I laughed. “Affirmative.” Placing a hand on her lower back, I guided her up the stairs and into the plane.

She marveled at the interior, her eyes taking in everything. “It's so beautiful.”

I tried to see it from her perspective. I'd been impressed the first time but had flown so much that the novelty had worn off. Now, I was appreciating it anew. The brown and cream interior was polished to a deep shine, and the flight attendants wore pressed black and white uniforms.

Violet sat beside the window, and I sat next to her.
